The Original Titleist Pro V1 Ball is no longer produced. It and the Titleist Pro V1 Improved are essentially the same ball. The Improved is just what the name implies. It is a refined version of the Original. The Titleist Pro V1 Star is also a second generation Pro V1. While it shares some of the characteristics of both other Pro V1′s, it is, in essence, a very different ball.
The Star was developed in response to feedback from some tournament players saying that they needed a Titleist Pro V1 Ball which produced lower trajectories and less spin on the green. To achieve this, Titleist made the Star a four-piece ball instead of a three-piece ball. It has a "dual core engine" and a "spin controlling ionomer casing". The resulting Star Titleist Pro V1 Ball is more of a "compromise" ball than was the Original. The Star is a ball that may be used successfully by a wider range of players. It flies more like a normal golf ball demonstrating noticeably less of the Original's trademarked "Stop and Drop" characteristics on approach shots. Trajectories are flatter and lower. The ball flight of the Star does not angle up to a peak and drop off to the same degree that those of the Original and Improved models do.
Aside from flight characteristics, feel is also different with the Titleist Pro V1 Ball Star. The Original version had a soft, somewhat grabby feel at impact that is not present in the Star. It was a feel that was not appreciated by all. By contrast, the Star has a feel that is less distinctive, but more universal in its appeal. Our testers have all found it to be very satisfying. Of the dozen or so balls being used in comparison sessions this season, the Star has consistently produced the most positive responses concerning feel. It has little of the buttery softness of earlier Titleist balls such as the Professional and Prestige. Instead, it has a gentle firmness that produces a gratifying click at impact. It feels lively and responsive, but with none of the harshness that can be found in many distance balls.
When compared to the Titleist Pro V1 Ball Original or Improved versions, distances with the Star may be longer for some players. For others, it may not. The distance variable depends upon how much spin a player imparts on the ball. Slicers and hookers are probably going to see a distance advantage with the Star. Its reduced spin rates are apt to keep balls flying a good bit straighter. The Original and Improved versions of the Pro V1 can exaggerate curvature on mishits and mid- to high-handicappers can often see their slices curve and die off due to excessive spin. High shots can also balloon upwards. These tendencies make the Titleist Pro V1 Ball Original and Improved less predictable than the Star, especially into the wind. Additionally, the Star has a somewhat lower trajectory that will benefit those hitters who lose length due to overly lofted flight patterns. It should be noted that the trajectories of the Star are lower and flatter than those of its siblings, but are not particularly low when compared to many rival balls. The Callaway HX Red has flown much lower and flatter during our sessions when hit side by side with the Star.
With longer clubs, the Star has produced very fine distances. Best hits are equal in length to all comparable, rival balls in its category. Consistency of length has not been as great as that shown by the very stable Callaway HX Red, however. Mishits with the Star fell well back of those with the HX Red. On the other hand, it proved to be more stable and predictable than the Maxfli A10 and Strata Ultimate2. Off of drivers, the Star was again the favored ball in terms of feel.
For putting and chipping, the Titleist Pro V1 Ball has been a likeable ball, but not an exceptional one. Though neutral and pleasant feeling, it actually finished last among the six competitors in our earlier putt-off. For more information read our comparative True Rollers Putt-Off

I purchased these to have something more forgiving since I was playing Ping I3 blades. Since I don't play as often I decided to buy something that would dampen mishit. I have a personal driving range and I found that my swing fault followed me, go figure :) Anyway, my 1st round was a disaster, but it wasn't the clubs. After the disaster I practiced all week with them, along with a major revision in my setup and shot 73 in my second round with them. So, they were redeemed. One thing I've noticed is that the offset is hidden well in the design of the club. I have never cared for offset, but it's almost invisible in this club. They feel really good in my hands and the thicker sole from the Ping's now seem normal.
