The Ping G15 Irons are a very new addition to the iron market, being an update of their G10 predecessors. They are designed mainly to be a game improvement club that's easy to hit and very forgiving. But these new Ping products are not cheap golf clubs.
The G15 Irons replace the hugely popular, market leading G10 irons and introduce a number of improvements that make them even more attractive than their best selling predecessors. The biggest improvement is that the G15 irons are a bit more forgiving thanks to the moment of inertia increasing which Ping has achieved by introducing a custom tuning port that is further back from the face of the clubhead. This has allowed Ping's designers to remove seven grams from the G15's face custom tuning port structure without destabilizing the clubface or reducing distance control. This weight is repositioned to move the center of gravity lower and back in the club head to help provide high launch and optimal spin.
The Ping G15 irons also have a slightly thinner face design with more weight moved to the toe to help increase forgiveness and the lofts are stronger and the sole design slightly wider than on the G10 irons to help produce strong and high trajectory. The G15 irons also have a full cavity graphics badge which helps to improve the feel of the club and promote a much softer feel.
It's in its forgiveness that the Ping G15 irons really earn their corn. You can hit one out of the toe or the heel or slightly fat and the consequences are not particularly dire. Yes there is some loss of distance, but the MOI is so high that wild shots left and right are greatly reduced. Cracking irons for the aspiring high-handicapper. They make the game easier. I purchased these to have something more forgiving since I was playing Ping I3 blades. Since I don't play as often I decided to buy something that would dampen mishit. I have a personal driving range and I found that my swing fault followed me, go figure :) Anyway, my 1st round was a disaster, but it wasn't the clubs. After the disaster I practiced all week with them, along with a major revision in my setup and shot 73 in my second round with them. So, they were redeemed. One thing I've noticed is that the offset is hidden well in the design of the club. I have never cared for offset, but it's almost invisible in this club. They feel really good in my hands and the thicker sole from the Ping's now seem normal.
