Two Men

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Two men, a priest and an aetheist, are playing golf.
At the green on the first hole, the aetheist, lines up for a short two-foot putt, taps the ball, and the ball slips around the edge of the cup and does not go in. “Dammit, I missed!” exclaims the aetheist.mario-golf
The priest, then tells the aetheist that he shouldn’t curse, because God will punish the aetheist for doing so.
On the second hole, the aetheist tries a particularly aggressive chip shot to get the ball onto the green and instead lands in a sand bunker. “Dammit I missed!” exclaimed the aetheist, to which the priest again issued a warning about God punishing those who curse.
The round continues in much the same way, with the aetheist continuing to exclaim “Dammit I missed!” every time he hits an errant ball (which is quite often), and the priest continues to admonish him about God’s wrath.

Finally, they get to the eighteenth hole and the score is tied. The aetheist needs to make a two-foot putt in order to win. He taps the ball, and again he misses, and again, he curses his miss.
Before the priest can respond, the clouds in the sky open up, and a bolt of lightning shoots out and hits the preist, killing him.
Then, from the cloud comes a loud voice “Dammit, I missed.”

Have A Confession

Monday, May 31st, 2010

golfing2One day a golfer brought his regular golfing buddies together, and gave them each $50,000 cash and instructed them that upon his death, they were to throw it into the coffin, because he wanted to take it with him.

As luck would have it, he died soon after. When the funeral was over, his buddies met.
The doctor in the group said “I have a confession to make. I put in an empty envelope and I used the money to buy equipment for the free clinic.”
The priest said “Me too, only I used the money to help build the youth center.”

Somewhat shocked, the last member of the group, a lawyer, said
“I can’t believe you guys went back on your word.”
They asked him if he actually put the $50,000 in the coffin.
He replied “I most certainly did….with my very own personal check.”

American Meaghan Francella Beat Mariajo Uribe

Monday, May 31st, 2010

callaway-x22-ironsAmerican Meaghan Francella beat Mariajo Uribe in a six-hole sudden death play-off to win the HSBC LPGA Brasil Cup at Itanhanga Golf Club.

Francella rolled in a 10-foot birdie putt on the sixth play-off hole – the par-three 17th – to win the USD105,000 check on offer to the winner.

The play-off was required after the pair were level at six-under-par after 36 holes, while Candie Kung’s five-under saw her push the duo close heading towards the climax.

Francella and Uribe, of Colombia, matched each other all the way in the play-off before the former picked up a shot on the sixth to take the win.

twehTiger Woods’ lawyers have advised him to stay away from women until his divorce with wife Elin is final, sources say.

It has been speculated that a romantic link up now will cost the golfer heavily during the divorce battle.

“Elin’s building a character case [based on his serial philandering]. Elin’s team is watching [Tiger's] every move,” the New York Post quoted a source as telling Us magazine.

Meanwhile, Elin is reportedly planning a trip to China in a bid to continue to stay away from her love-rat husband.

Japanese Tour

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Golf0531“It’s like when (Japanese teen phenom) Ryo Ishikawa shot that 58 a couple weeks ago (in the final round to win a Japanese Tour event), and the first thing everyone does is question the golf course and the tournament,” said Sports Illustrated golf writer Alan Shipnuck, whose book Swinging from My Heels: Confessions of an LPGA Star, co-written with Christina Kim, was released last month.

“But it’s an unbelievable feat, any time, anywhere. It’s one thing if it’s a casual game with your buddies and you’re giving mulligans. But in tournament play? You know it’s legit. It’s pretty amazing.”

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example:Mizuno mx1000 irons     xxio mp600 irons   Callaway X-24 Hot Irons

Kureluk broke what was believed to be the world record of 26, coheld by PGA players Corey Pavin and Jason Bohn — both of whom, coincidentally, are in the top 10 of this weekend’s Crowne Plaza Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas. Bohn shot his 26 in 2001 on a par-35 nine en route to victory in a Canadian Tour event in Sarnia, Ont., while Pavin did his on a par-34 nine in 2006 at a PGA event in Milwaukee.

“It seemed like it was a misprint up there, maybe,” Pavin told reporters at the time. “It was just one of those nine holes, once in a lifetime for me, so far, anyway.

“I knew 59 was a possibility and I tried to keep those voices away,” he said. “I was just trying to hit each shot the best I could. I got a little nervous from time to time.”

That feat gained notoriety, as you might expect. Take, for instance, this gem from columnist Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel just days after Pavin’s historic round: “Corey Pavin shot a 26 Thursday. And John Daly drank one.”

golf 0Another Sports Illustrated writer, Gary Van Sickle, was on the Brown Deer Park course in Milwaukee for Pavin’s round, but didn’t see a single shot. As it happened, he was in the midst of doing a first-person column on caddying, carrying the bag for Andy North, who, ironically, had a share of the old PGA Tour nine-hole record of 27.

“He was grumbling about it,” recalled Van Sickle. “We were on the course and somebody made a comment about Pavin shooting the 26 and he said something like, ‘Great, there goes another record.’ He wasn’t all that thrilled. So it was ironic; not only was I caddying, but I was caddying for the guy whose record he broke. What are the odds of that?”

Probably just as long as they are of shooting a 25.

“If you think about it, if he can shoot a 25 on nine, what number ISN’T in play (for 18 holes)?” said Van Sickle, who, like Shipnuck, heard about Kureluk’s round the day it happened. “What about 55 or 56 or 54? Somebody is going to have a day like this guy did for all 18 holes and he’s going to shoot 55, and our jaws are going to drop.

“Even a nine-hole score in the 20s isn’t all that common. You just don’t hear about guys shooting 29 all that often; 28, even less often. And 27? Forget it. When you’re at 27, 26, 25, it’s almost beyond belief. It’s one of those rounds where you’d have to say the guy must have holed out from the fairway at least twice, made a hole-in-one, or knocked in a full iron for a double-eagle. Twenty-eight is a great score. Twenty-five? Time for a drug test and a birth certificate.”

Kim Kyung-tae Held On to Claim A First Japan Golf Tour Title

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Kim Kyung-taeKim Kyung-tae held on to claim a first Japan Golf Tour title with a two-shot victory at the Diamond Cup.

Following five second-placed finishes over the last two seasons in Japan, 23-year-old Kim carded three birdies against two fourth-round bogeys for a one-under-par 71 at Sayama Golf Club in Saitama Prefecture to hold off Japan’s Komei Oda, after beginning the final round with a six-shot lead.

Japan’s Oda carded four birdies in a five-hole stretch on the back nine to claim second with a 66, a shot clear of compatriot Kaname Yokoo, who shot a bogey-free 65.

Kim Hyung-sung claimed fourth, a further stroke off the pace after a 68, with Shingo Katayama (71) six shots behind Kim in fifth.

Luke Donald Prevailed in the Madrid Masters

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Luke Donald 0English golf awoke this morning in dreamland. A week after throwing away the BMW PGA Championship, Luke Donald prevailed in the Madrid Masters to break back into the top 10. It means that there are four Englishmen in the top nine of the world; an astonishing representation, particularly when one considers that just a decade ago Lee Westwood was the only Englishman in the top 100.

But although this means so much to his country, this was essentially a personal milestone for Donald. In seeing off the Welsh rookie Rhys Davies, he delivered a well-timed retort to all those critics who said he had forgotten how to win. He held his cool to claim his first victory for four years and his first in Europe in six years. And in doing so, Donald went a long way to buttoning down his Ryder Cup spot, rising to fourth in the points race.

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example:Tourstage Bridgestone ViQ driver   xxio mp600 irons

In fact, there was good news everywhere the 32-year-old looked. What a difference seven days can make in this fickle sport. At Wentworth, Donald blew the European Tour’s flagship event by taking a double-bogey seven on the penultimate hole. This time around he grabbed a brilliant eagle to settle his duel with the ever more impressive Davies.

Level with three to play, Donald hit a 252-yard fairway wood to 12 feet on the long 16th and with his third eagle of the week – “It’s because I’m a big hitter,” he joked – struck the decisive blow. Davies, already a winner in this, his first full season on the European Tour, birdied the hole and still had a chance to force sudden death, but his 20-foot effort on the last was never on the right line.

The last time Donald had tasted success was at the Honda Classic in America in March 2006. His nerveless 67 helped to a 21-under par total of 267, which earned him £215,000. Yet he said: “The money is secondary. It’s been a while since I won and to put last week behind me makes me very proud. The way I played today means a lot to me. The eagle was huge because Rhys put a lot of pressure on me. It’s happiness and relief – definitely some relief.”

It isn’t his style, but Donald would have been forgiven for aiming a huge raspberry at his doubters. After last year’s Open, where he finished fifth, an American writer coined the term “Luke Donald disease”, pointing to him as the perfect example of a bunch of British players who earn a lot but do not win very often. “It was a bad article – it’s wrong,” commented Donald. “I don’t listen to my critics too much, but it was frustrating for myself not having won for four years.”

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example:Mizuno mx1000 irons    Callaway Diablo Forged irons  Callaway X-24 Hot Irons

He can now point to the fact that England has as many players in the top 10 – himself, Westwood, Ian Poulter and Paul Casey – as America does. And there also happens to be Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy in there too.

Davies, 25 last Friday, would have leapt into the top 50 with victory, but he is climbing fast and he will hope to go one better at this coming week’s Wales Open at Celtic Manor, where Donald also appears. “I didn’t make a bogey in the final group in a big tournament,” Davies said. “It didn’t quite come off, but I’ve lots to be pleased about.

Meanwhile, there was yet more for English golf fans to cheer on last night. Brian Davis went into the final round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at the Colonial in Texas tied for the lead with Bryce Molder. Many in the US were also rooting for the 35-year-old Londoner.

Six weeks ago, Davis called a penalty on himself when contesting a play-off with Jim Furyk in the Heritage tournament in South Carolina. In that moment of honesty – which cost him the chance of a $1m (£650,000) cheque – Davis became a hero. After six barren years on the PGA Tour could this proven European Tour winner finally end the drought? Donald had provided the inspiration.

Rhys Davies Has Vowed to Go One Better at The Celtic Manor

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Rhys Davies has vowed to go one better at the Celtic Manor this week after an epic Madrid Masters battle yesterday with Luke Donald at Real Sociedad Golf Club.

Victory for Davies, who celebrated his 25th birthday last Friday, would have elevated him into the elite top 50 on the world rankings.Rhys Davies

But the Hassan Trophy winner headed back to South Wales last night with the consolation of a £142,000 runners-up cheque taking his earnings in 2010 to a staggering £650,000.

And, after a stunning eagle on the 16th gave Englishman Donald the Madrid Masters crown on 21 under par, while Davies was a stroke further back, the duo are set to renew their rivalries over the Twenty Ten Course at the Celtic Manor this week.

“ Second is not a bad result, but I definitely want to win tournaments,” said Davies.

“It went down to the wire and it was tight all the way through in Spain.

“Luke won in style and it was him winning the tournament as opposed to me or anyone else losing it.

“I felt if I could keep Luke in my sights I could have a chance at the end and I did that.

“I’m disappointed I didn’t get there in the end.

“This is another top-three finish and if you achieve that it gives you an extra notch as it means you’ve had a chance to win.

“Although this isn’t a win, it’s a top three and therefore I’m gaining more and more experience in how to handle myself in difficult situations.

“I’m having a couple of days off to recharge myself so I can go into the Wales Open feeling confident.

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example:Callaway Diablo Edge Irons    Mizuno mx1000 irons

“I’m going to the Celtic Manor thinking I can win and my approach will be no different.

“It will be even more special being back home in a Wales. Hopefully I can perform well, my game feels good and hopefully I can go one better than Madrid.”

Davies will also be buoyed by a glowing tribute from Donald as he bids to become the first home winner of the Wales Open at the 11th time of asking.

“Hats off to Rhys he was a very tough competitor and no-one likes to finish second,” said Donald, just a week after he came runner-up in the BMW PGA Championship, at Wentworth.

“But he has already won this year so it was my turn to have a win.

“He’s got a very bright future ahead of him and anyone with a putting stroke like Rhys has will go a long way in the game.”

Church Village-born Jamie Donaldson did his Wales Open quest the power of good with a tied sixth spot on 13 under par, while the rest of the Welsh challenge faded somewhat.

Phil Price was tied 52nd on three under and Pontyclun’s Sion Bebb was in tied 60th a stroke further back alongside Morganstown’s Bradley Dredge.

Barry Island’s Stephen Dodd was four over.

OMark O’Meara’s Got Senior PGA Championship title

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Mark O'Meara

Mark O’Meara’s only win on the Champions Tour came with a caveat: It was a team event and he was paired with Nick Price.

He’s in position to win again, this time flying solo.

O’Meara turned in a 5-under-par 67 on Saturday in the third round of the Senior PGA Championship, leaving him two shots behind co-leaders Jay Don Blake and Tom Lehman.

A win here would mean a lot to the 53-year-old, maybe even as much as when he hoisted the Masters and British Open trophies in 1998.

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example:Callaway Diablo Forged irons    Callaway X-24 Hot Irons

“It would be a feather in the cap,” O’Meara said. “But there’s a lot of work still out there to happen.”

The nerves are beginning to surface. Even after all these years, contending for a title still makes him antsy.

It’s a feeling he’s almost forgotten in recent years, and glad to have back.

“I’ve got to go out there and play really well to try to come out on top,” said O’Meara, who finished runner-up at the Outback Steakhouse tournament in April. “It would mean a lot.”

No one really knows the terrain at the Colorado Golf Club all that well. Only three years old, the course hasn’t been played that often by pros who don’t live in the area.

But O’Meara does have some familiarity with it, having travelled here two summers ago to get a look at a challenging course that was co-designed by Ben Crenshaw.

Just like then, it’s still windy.

And just like then, it remains tricky to gauge, given the thin air.

“Not just the fact that we’re at 6,000 feet or whatever, and the ball’s going 10 to 12 per cent farther, but there are a lot of uphill and downhill shots, quite dramatic on this golf course,” O’Meara said.

He found a way to combat that by sinking his putts. He was a putting prodigy Saturday as he had nine one-putts, draining birdies from off the green on the 10th and 17th holes.

“Made a lot of nice putts out there,” O’Meara said. “I’ve been practising pretty hard at home and working on it.”

As for his game plan for Sunday, it’s actually quite simple.

“It’s going to be manage yourself, be patient, fight hard, just give yourself a chance,” O’Meara said.

Tom Lehman Has Always Prided Himself On Outlasting His Flashier Opponents

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Tom Lehman has always prided himself on outlasting his flashier opponents by playing steady if unspectacular golf.

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example:Callaway X-24 Hot Irons    Callaway Diablo Forged irons

Never was that more evident than Sunday when Lehman won the 71st Senior PGA Championship with a par on the first playoff hole, where Fred Couples and David Frost double-bogeyed after terrible tee shots.

Tom-Lehman_1

Lehman began the sudden death playoff on No. 18 with a solid shot down the fairway before Couples’ only bad tee shot of the tournament veered left into the shrubs, forcing him to take a drop.

Frost’s tee shot ended up in the left bunker and he pulled his second shot left of the gallery. He cleared out dozens of pine cones in between him and the green before striking his ball, which was nestled in a shrub, across the green.

“That was just a bizarre playoff,” Lehman said. “I’m not sure I’ve ever experienced anything like that. I turned to my caddie and I said, ‘How many shots have they taken?’”

Frost and Couples finished with 6s before Lehman’s birdie putt from 12 feet came up a quarter roll short. He smiled, tapped it from there, pumped his right fist and cradled the silver trophy.

“I think I had an advantage from the start because I had just finished,” Lehman said. “The longer you have to wait I think the tougher it gets to play in a playoff.”

Frost had waited 45 minutes, Couples half an hour.

“And I basically just finished signing my card and went back and hit it,” Lehman said.

Just getting into the playoff took the kind of gapless golf and dogged determination that Lehman is known for. After bogeys on three of his first five holes, he huddled with his caddie and promised not to beat himself.

He didn’t, finishing the last 13 holes bogey-free at 3 under.

“And I really didn’t do anything exceptional,” Lehman said, “but I didn’t make any mistakes.”

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example:Mizuno mx1000 irons    Callaway Diablo Edge Irons

Everyone around him did.

Lehman’s first individual Champions Tour triumph — he teamed with Bernhard Langer to win the 2009 Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf — was worth $360,000.

Couples and Frost each took home $176,000 of the $2 million purse, which was of little consolation to Couples, who has energized the Champions Tour this season, winning half of the six events he entered before coming to Colorado, where the thin air favored his strong drives — but not in sudden death.

After congratulating Lehman, Couples put his head down and stormed toward the clubhouse, where he quickly grabbed a couple of irons out of his locker and bolted for the parking lot.

Tom Lehman“It’s pretty disappointing,” was all Couples had to say as he hustled to a waiting car.

Behind back-to-back eagles on Nos. 15 and 16, Couples had a chance to win this tournament outright in regulation but his eight-foot putt for birdie on 18 missed by an inch. Just as he was putting, a wind gust of about 25 mph came, but he didn’t back away.

His tap-in left him with a 69 and in a tie with Frost (67) and Tom Lehman (71), who joined the playoff at 7 under par by sinking a 4 1/2-foot putt on 18 in only a slight breeze.

Frost simply ran out of miracles on the 73rd hole.

“I didn’t have enough guts to aim it way out right and bring it back like Tom did,” Frost said. “But I won’t let one hole bother me when I played so many good holes out there yesterday and today.”

Frost was tied for 45th at 5 over par after 36 holes — a dozen shots behind Couples, who led at the halfway mark — before shooting 65-67 over the weekend.

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example:Tourstage Bridgestone ViQ driver   BridgeStone TourStage V-iQ Irons

Lehman began the day as the co-leader with Jay Don Blake, whose eagle on No. 7 gave him a two-shot lead that was short-lived.

Blake, who hasn’t won in 396 starts, sauntered onto No. 8, took a couple of practice swings with his 4-iron — and topped his tee shot 30 yards into the bushes.

“I just totally shanked one, shanked it right into a ditch,” Blake said. “From then on, I felt like I couldn’t really be at ease at hitting some good iron shots. I was pretty cautious all day. That kind of put me in a bad frame of mind.”

After taking the penalty and carding a double-bogey, both Blake’s game and hopes of winning for the first time since 1991 unraveled.

“It gets in your head,” said Blake, who finished with a 76, tied for eighth place at 2 under for the tournament.

It was cooler and calmer Sunday at the picturesque Colorado Golf Club, but the pin placements were the toughest yet. The ever-shifting winds added to the adversity the golfers faced at the 3-year-old course co-designed by Ben Crenshaw.

Crenshaw said he wants to fatten the fairways on his 7,464-foot monster for any future majors.

Lehman was the only golfer to shoot four rounds under par here.

“I loved the course from the moment I laid my eyes on it,” Lehman said.

the Kava Cup Golf Tournament

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

By playing in the Kava Cup golf tournament, based on what I have personally experienced, you will have the time of your life in the Fiji Islands. The Fiji Islands offer a myriad of adventures: exquisite accommodations at the InterContinental Resort & Spa, championship golf that hugs the South Pacific ocean, fine dining, visiting an authentic tribal village, speed boating down the Sigatoka River, a memorable night on fascinating Mana Island, and camaraderie with the friendliest hosts on earth—the Fijian people. xxio mp600 irons

When arriving, the first thing you see is the countryside’s variety of green hues. Vibrant gradations of green, leafy plants blanket the earth reminding you that you’re in tropical paradise.

The luxurious InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa, with its grand opening in 2009, features every modern convenience and amenity you ever want while vacationing.

Located on one of the world’s most beautiful beaches and featuring five restaurants and bars, a serene spa, 18 holes of championship golf, and four swimming pools, the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa is nestled amongst 35 acres of lush indigenous vegetation and defines all that a tropical retreat should be.

The resort includes the world-class Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course. The 18 hole par-72 course meanders through the beachfront landscape of Fiji’s Coral Coast and features 15 holes with views of the ocean and coral reefs. “Designed by international golf circuit regular and Fiji’s own Vijay Singh, Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course is breathtaking at first sight,” writes Matelita Ragogo in Air Pacific Islands. “Even if you don’t play golf, you’d want to start.”

Among the numerous memorable holes is the 4th where the greenside bunker is on the beach itself; and the 16th tee, where if you take a few steps back, you’re standing on the reef—that’s how close this golf course gem is to the ocean. “Fiji has been calling out to have a world-standard golf course built and it was just waiting for someone to have the passion and vision to do it,” says General Manager David Roche. “As far as the layout is concerned, as well as the quality and the way the golf course is maintained, there is nothing better in the region.”

Highlights of my trip to the Fiji Islands, beyond enjoying the ocean-side golf, include walking and relaxing on the pure white beaches, jetting down the Sigatoka River on route to the Fiji village, and experiencing first hand a kava cup ceremony and the way Fijians live within their village.

Of all the beaches I’ve ever walked on in the world including Hawaii, Jamaica, Sandestin, to name a few, none are more beautiful than the beaches of Natadola Bay. The miniature grains of sand sift through your toes and massage the soles of your feet. The vivid white sand connecting gradations of teal waters and the pure blue skies reminds you that you’re in paradise.

An exciting adventure I will never forget was our excursion on the Sigatoka River Safari. Excursion isn’t quite the right word; “fast adventure ride” is more accurate. The safari takes you into the heart of the Fijian interior aboard jet boats to places you never knew existed and to meet real people living the real Fijian village lifestyle.
I witnessed the Kaicolo (Mountain People) utilizing the mighty Sigatoka River as their forefathers did for centuries. Villagers waist-high walking their horses from one bank of the river to the other. Fijians wash their clothes and bathe in the river, waving furiously to make sure you know that they are welcoming you. Villagers standing high on the riverbanks, smiling and shouting “Bula” (Hello).

There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example:BridgeStone TourStage V-iQ Irons     Honma Beres MG 803 Irons

After your 45-minute jet boat ride and the captain throws out the anchor, you walk through a shallow part of the river, step on shore to meander on a dirt path toward the village. In an instant, life changes to ancestral customs and lifestyle that goes back hundreds of years. I enjoyed immensely the face painting ceremony that welcomes guests (other tribes) to the village and the intoxicating (literally) kava cup drinking ceremony.Fijian tradition dictates that the oldest villager is the chief. I, being the oldest from our group, was ordained the visiting chief. So, I was “required” to sip a lot of kava. I willingly complied. Saying goodbye to the villagers wasn’t easy because a permanent bond had been established. The authenticity and friendliness of the Fijian villagers will forever be embedded in my heart, and I will carry their message of friendship throughout my life.

The intricate making of the kava drink from the roots of the kava plant mixed and ordained in the large kava bowl is fascinating; a ritual that began in the 1700s. The village chief offers the bowl to the visiting chief and the fun begins. Then the kava bowl is passed to all those that wish to indulge.

You can partake in the wonderful experiences the Fiji Islands have to offer by playing in the 2010 KAVA Cup golf tournament, October 10-17, held at the magnificent InterContinental Fiji Resort & Spa and its Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course.

A Retiree

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

A retiree was given a set of golf clubs by his co-workers. Hawaii
Thinking he’d try the game, he asked the local pro for lessons, explaining that he knew nothing whatever of the game.
The pro showed him the stance and swing, then said, “Just hit the ball toward the flag on the first green.”
The novice teed up and smacked the ball straight down the fairway and onto the green, where it stopped inches from the hole.
