“It’s like when (Japanese teen phenom) Ryo Ishikawa shot that 58 a couple weeks ago (in the final round to win a Japanese Tour event), and the first thing everyone does is question the golf course and the tournament,” said Sports Illustrated golf writer Alan Shipnuck, whose book Swinging from My Heels: Confessions of an LPGA Star, co-written with Christina Kim, was released last month.
“But it’s an unbelievable feat, any time, anywhere. It’s one thing if it’s a casual game with your buddies and you’re giving mulligans. But in tournament play? You know it’s legit. It’s pretty amazing.”

Kureluk broke what was believed to be the world record of 26, coheld by PGA players Corey Pavin and Jason Bohn — both of whom, coincidentally, are in the top 10 of this weekend’s Crowne Plaza Invitational in Fort Worth, Texas. Bohn shot his 26 in 2001 on a par-35 nine en route to victory in a Canadian Tour event in Sarnia, Ont., while Pavin did his on a par-34 nine in 2006 at a PGA event in Milwaukee.
“It seemed like it was a misprint up there, maybe,” Pavin told reporters at the time. “It was just one of those nine holes, once in a lifetime for me, so far, anyway.
“I knew 59 was a possibility and I tried to keep those voices away,” he said. “I was just trying to hit each shot the best I could. I got a little nervous from time to time.”
That feat gained notoriety, as you might expect. Take, for instance, this gem from columnist Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel just days after Pavin’s historic round: “Corey Pavin shot a 26 Thursday. And John Daly drank one.”
Another Sports Illustrated writer, Gary Van Sickle, was on the Brown Deer Park course in Milwaukee for Pavin’s round, but didn’t see a single shot. As it happened, he was in the midst of doing a first-person column on caddying, carrying the bag for Andy North, who, ironically, had a share of the old PGA Tour nine-hole record of 27.
“He was grumbling about it,” recalled Van Sickle. “We were on the course and somebody made a comment about Pavin shooting the 26 and he said something like, ‘Great, there goes another record.’ He wasn’t all that thrilled. So it was ironic; not only was I caddying, but I was caddying for the guy whose record he broke. What are the odds of that?”
Probably just as long as they are of shooting a 25.
“If you think about it, if he can shoot a 25 on nine, what number ISN’T in play (for 18 holes)?” said Van Sickle, who, like Shipnuck, heard about Kureluk’s round the day it happened. “What about 55 or 56 or 54? Somebody is going to have a day like this guy did for all 18 holes and he’s going to shoot 55, and our jaws are going to drop.
“Even a nine-hole score in the 20s isn’t all that common. You just don’t hear about guys shooting 29 all that often; 28, even less often. And 27? Forget it. When you’re at 27, 26, 25, it’s almost beyond belief. It’s one of those rounds where you’d have to say the guy must have holed out from the fairway at least twice, made a hole-in-one, or knocked in a full iron for a double-eagle. Twenty-eight is a great score. Twenty-five? Time for a drug test and a birth certificate.”
