Bernhard Langer Took Over The Top Spot At The Second Day Of The U.S. Senior Open

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

The second day of the U.S. Senior Open at Sahalee got off to a slow start, as play was suspended at 7:48 a.m. due to fog and didn’t resumed at 10 a.m.

Besides the fog, the next biggest story of the day was the change up top of the leaderboard.

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example: taylormade r9 superdeep tp driver, Callaway Big Bertha Diablo irons, Callaway X-22 Irons Left Handed, Callaway X-22 Irons, Callaway Diablo Edge Driver

Bernhard Langer took over the top spot after going two under today. He is now three under for the tournament. Yesterday’s leader, Bruce Vaughan is now in a tie for 40th after shooting 12 over par today.

Langer said this event isn’t much different from most.

“I hit it straight and made some putts. It’s always the same, isn’t it? Just different venues, different conditions, but it’s always same idea, hit it where you’re looking and try and play smart,” Langer said. “Attack the holes that can be attacked and play smart on the other ones.”

Also having a good day was J.R. Roth, who shot four under and is now one under for the open. Tied with him at second is Tommy Armour III and John cook. Both shot two under today.

Roth said he is confident in his position in the tournament.

“This course is even better for me, because it’s like a number of courses we play on Champions Tour,” Roth said. “I just have to keep it in play and I know I can putt well enough. As long as I keep it in play off the tee and as long as length is not a primary factor. I’ve won enough golf tournaments where winning this golf tournament would be extraordinary, but if you’ve never won golf tournaments before then you don’t know what the pressure is like.”

Out of the five local participants, only Couples managed to make the cut. He shot even par again today and remains even at the tournament.

Among the other notable golfers to not make the cut were Fuzzy Zoeller, Hale Irwin, Mark O’Meara and Ben Crenshaw.

The Greenbrier Classic:Rich Lerner Knew What Can Be Impressed By Viewers

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Rich Lerner of The Golf Channel knew viewers would be impressed by what they saw if they tuned in to watch The Greenbrier Classic.

Lerner is the lead announcer for the cable network and called the action Thursday and Friday from the Old White course at The Greenbrier Resort. He shared the tower behind the 18th green with Nick Faldo.

I’m glad that you can visit our website, there are series of golf clubs, for example: Taylormade Burner Series, Mizuno MX Series, Callaway FT Series, Ping G Series, TaylorMade R9 Series

Thirteen years ago, Lerner and his three brothers gave their dad, Les, a trip to The Greenbrier as a 70th birthday present. They played a round of golf on Old White course. During their round, golf legend Sam Snead, who called the Greenbrier his home, played a couple of holes with the Lerners’ dad.

“He was thrilled and really enjoyed it,” Lerner said.

At that time, Lerner ran a driving range and miniature golf course for his dad in Allentown, Pa.

Just as he did then, Lerner today is taking advantage of all the amenities the resort has to offer before he goes on the air. He said other Golf Channel staffers are doing the same.

“It’s like going to summer camp,” he said Friday morning during a workout break in the Tennis Center. He said fellow Golf Channel staffers have visited the Gun Club (trap and skeet shooting), taken the bunker tour (U.S. Government Relocation facility) under the West Wing in the hotel, played tennis, bungee jumped and played golf along with other activities.

Lerner said the backdrop with the resort and historic Old White course built by C.B. McDonald (1914) and Seth Raynor and renovated by Lester George served as a magnet to attract players to the majestic setting in the Appalachian Mountains.

“From what I hear from players and families, they are enjoying this. They love it,” he said.

Since Lerner was familiar with The Greenbrier, it didn’t surprise him that new resort owner Jim Justice secured a six-year deal with the PGA Tour. The slot opened when the Buick Open ceased operations after the 2009 tournament.

“I’m glad they were able to fill the hole so quickly,” Lerner said. “They came to a great resort.”

While fans and viewers hoped to see Tiger Wood and Phil Mickelson this week, the top two players in the world are not here. Jim Furyk, No. 5 in the FedExCup standings, has the loftiest position of the players here.

Lerner said life will go on without Tiger and Lefty.

“Too much is made of it,” he said. “There are so many good players around the world now. Are all the best here? No. Paul Goydos (who shot a 59 in the John Deere Classic earlier this season) said this tournament could have 10 major championship winners in the field some day. You don’t know who they are because they haven’t won yet.”

Old White, following the second George makeover, was stretched to 7,031 yards. Most of the distance was gained by building new tees. Low scores were predicted and so far there’s plenty of red (under-par) numbers on the scoreboard. There were 81 sub-par rounds Thursday, with 97 players posting par or better.

“You see a variety of courses every week,” Lerner said. “It’s like baseball. People see a 13-10 slugfest and they’re entertained. You see a 2-1 pitcher’s duel and it’s a different reaction. I like the variety. This is an interesting course with great history and characteristics and features you don’t see every week.”

Lerner lives in Orlando and has been with The Golf Channel since 1997. In addition to working in the tower, Lerner does commentary and interviews at tournaments and handles assignments in the Orlando studio.

The Famous Old Spirit Of The Irish Open Was Revived And Walked The Fairways Once Again

Friday, July 30th, 2010

On a glorious day by the lakes of Killarney, when the famous old spirit of the Irish Open was revived and walked the fairways once again, how appropriate it was to see plain-talking Damien McGrane emerge as the standard-bearer for a star-studded home team.

Ireland had to wait eight years for the sun to shine on its premier golf championship. Not since Fota Island in 2002 had there been a day quite like yesterday at Killeen as 17,812 paying customers were treated to a birdie fest and, whisper it, playing professional golf on this island actually looked fun.

Though McGrane acquired his full European Tour card in 2003, he’s a no-nonsense, old-fashioned type of guy, almost a throwback to those salad days of the Irish Open when professionals combined flint-hard resolve and a solid, no frills golf game into golden moments on the course.

The diminutive Meathman was ‘drawn’ with Ireland’s two Major Champions, Padraig Harrington and Pebble Beach hero Graeme McDowell and outplayed them both, racking up six birdies in a faultless round of 65 which left him in a tie for second with Australia’s Richard Green, just one behind leader David Howell.

Right from the off early yesterday morning, excitement coursed around the shores of Lough Leane and Rory McIlroy cannot remember so many people being present to watch him tee up his ball at eight o’clock in the morning at the first hole of a tournament.

Of course, there was ample reason for them to be there as McIlroy played with his Northern Ireland mentor Darren Clarke for the first time in competition … and those thousands who lined the fairways to see this fascinating ‘duel’ were well rewarded.

Clarke, 41, and in the middle of a swashbuckling last ditch effort to make the Ryder Cup at Celtic Manor as a player instead of vice-captain, certainly had the upper hand yesterday, posting a masterful, fault-free 66 to eclipse his young Ulster protégé by one stroke.

In keeping with his recent good form, the elder man hit all 18 greens in regulation and sank an impressive series of putts for good measure, helped no doubt by the green-reading skills of his caddie Brendan McCurtain to come to grips with the undulating and sometimes perplexing putting surfaces here.

As one has come to expect, McIlroy played like a young gunslinger, shooting at pins, which yesterday occasionally required him to make promises which his short game would not let him keep.

For example, the 21-year-old was four-under par after seven holes and looked every bit the pre-tournament favourite until his natural aggression got the better of him.

The first of McIlroy’s three bogeys came when he drove well through the fairway and was blocked out by a tree at nine; the second when he went for the tight pin at 11 and wound-up short-sided in the semi-rough to the right of the green and the third when he was tight-sided once again in a greenside bunker at 13.

Yet McIlroy would rebound with three birdies in his final five holes to keep his victory hopes very much alive with a satisfactory 67, though the sense of frustration he exuded afterwards gave clear notice of the 21-year-old’s high ambition at this championship.

Up there in a tie for fourth place with Clarke on this glorious day for Irish golf was Michael Hoey, 31, the softly-spoken Belfastman paying tribute to the massed ranks of fans for helping to ferry him through the final few holes of his foot-perfect round.

Hoey, winner of the Estroil Open de Portugal last season, needed this psychological boost as he’d been beset by stamina problems in recent months following a viral infection earlier in the season.

Also looking forward to the next three days with renewed optimism is Paul McGinley after a 68 which featured a phenomenal eagle three at the seventh hole, where he hit a 214 yards 4-iron to within one foot of the pin.

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example: taylormade r9 superdeep tp driver, Callaway Big Bertha Diablo irons, Callaway X-22 Irons Left Handed, Callaway Diablo Edge Driver, Callaway Diablo Edge Fairway Woods

McDowell felt he needed to “sharpen-up” all round after an opening 70 which included a momentum-sapping, three-putt double-bogey six at 11, Harrington really had to grind hard for a bogey-free 68 which should help shore-up his flagging confidence.

Yet there’s a confident new air about the ‘3′ Irish Open after a day which Clarke quite rightly described as “brilliant.

“When you look out there today and think of those pictures being beamed around the world, it doesn’t really get any better,” he said.

Tiger Woods Has Committed To Defend His Title At The World Golf Championships

Friday, July 30th, 2010

World number one Tiger Woods has committed to defend his title at the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational next week at Firestone Country Club, where he has won seven times.

Woods announced on his website that he will make the 8.5 million-dollar event his eighth start of a comeback season in the wake of a sex scandal. Woods is off to his worst career start of a campaign, having yet to win a 2010 event.

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example: Taylormade Burner XD Irons, XXIO MP600 Driver, Callaway Diablo Edge Fairway Woods, Callaway Diablo Edge Driver, Callaway X-22 Irons Left Handed

Woods has never finished lower than fourth at the WGC event in Akron, Ohio, but has not won since details of his adultery scandal surfaced last November.

In taking the 1.4 million-dollar Bridgestone top prize last year, Woods fired two rounds of 65 on the weekend to defeat Ireland’s Padraig Harrington and Australian Robert Allenby by four strokes.

That victory made Woods the first player to win the same stroke play event seven times on the same course, having previously won at Firestone from 1999-2001 and 2005-2007.

Sam Snead owns the record with eight titles at a single event in Greensboro, North Carolina, but those came upon different courses.

Woods will use the event as a tuneup for the year’s final major tournament, the PGA Championship, which will be staged the following week at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wisconsin.

Woods, a 14-time major winner, is chasing the all-time record of 18 majors won by Jack Nicklaus. But he is also pursuing Nicklaus and Snead in another win mark, the all-time PGA championship record.

With 71 PGA Tour titles, Woods stands two shy of Nicklaus for second on the all-time title list that Snead leads with 82.

Woods is coming off a share of 23rd at the British Open earlier this month at St. Andrews. He shared fourth at the Masters, his comeback event after a five-month layoff, and the US Open in this year’s other major championships.

Woods last won a US PGA event at last year’s BMW Championship, the third event of the US PGA playoffs. This year, he might struggle simply to qualify for a chance to defend that crown.

Despite having twice won the US PGA playoff crown, Woods ranks only 107th in this year’s points race, which concludes in Greensboro the week after the PGA Championship. Only the top 125 in the points race reach the playoff field.

A Plan Installed For The Inaugural Greenbrier Classic

Friday, July 30th, 2010

A plan installed in advance to manage the increased traffic expected during the inaugural Greenbrier Classic is running as smoothly as expected, according to Greenbrier County Sheriff James Childers, a sentiment echoed by merchants and visitors alike.

I’m glad that you can visit our website, there are series of golf clubs, for example: Taylormade Burner Series, Mizuno MX Series, Callaway FT Series, Ping G Series, TaylorMade R9 Series

“It’s a lot of hours for a lot of people — law enforcement, EMS, fire departments — but there’ve been no problems I know of,” Childers said Thursday. “All the departments are working together. The Lewisburg and White Sulphur Springs police departments have done a great job with the traffic, and it appears the buses are moving smoothly.”

Shuttle buses are transporting fans, volunteers and Greenbrier Resort employees between the parking lot at the state fairgrounds in Fairlea and the Old White golf course on the resort grounds, site of the PGA TOUR event.

Crowds were expected to swell as the weekend approached, with the competition getting under way Thursday morning and continuing through Sunday.

Craig Miller, owner of Serenity Now Outfitters on Washington Street, compared the traffic situation in Lewisburg to that experienced during the State Fair, now just two weeks away.

“Traffic is moving better now than it usually does except at fair time,” Miller said.

He said his shop, which is known for its inventory of outdoor adventure equipment, has seen some additional business this week that appears to be Classic-related, attributing much of the influx of patrons to the Reba McEntire concert Wednesday night at the fairgrounds.

“There were people who came to the area specifically for the concert,” Miller noted.

He plans to extend the store’s hours this evening and perhaps Saturday, and is considering opening Sunday, doing his part to welcome the visitors to the area.

“If West Virginia’s name is attached to it, I want it to succeed,” Miller said.

Becky Black, owner of the Stonehouse General Store, also on Washington, said although she’s noticed a drop-off in local customers this week, much like fair week, her shop is also attracting Classic-goers.

“There are tourists in the downtown shops,” Black said Thursday. “While the men are on the golf course, the ladies are out shopping.”

The golf tournament provided an incentive for Black to expand the gift shop’s food service, adding dinner hours to an increasingly popular lunch schedule about three weeks ago.

“Our lunch crowd has been very good this week,” she said, adding, “We always get a lot of courthouse employees and other downtown workers.”

The Plaid Eagle, an antique shop owned and operated by Karen Lee McClung, has also benefited from the Classic crowd.

“I’ve had lovely customers this week,” McClung said. “They’re extremely impressed with the area. I’ve heard nothing but nice comments.”

Prominently featured in the shop are tables full of vintage Greenbrier china, along with furniture and other memorabilia.

“I just sold a Carleton Varney-signed scarf,” McClung noted, referring to the interior designer responsible for continuing the distinctive style of Dorothy Draper which is integral to the ambiance of The Greenbrier.

Among the shoppers in The Plaid Eagle Thursday were three women who were taking a break from volunteer duties at the tournament.

“My friend is marshaling over at the golf course, and I’m just running around,” said Joan T. Hill, a South Charleston native who now lives in Oak Island, N.C.

“We have an RV and are staying at the fairgrounds,” she said. “Everyone has just been so helpful and nice. It’s been a good experience. And the traffic pattern has been awesome.”

Hill came to Greenbrier County for the Classic after attending the all-class reunion in South Charleston. Another former classmate, who now lives in Michigan, is also volunteering at the golf tournament, she said.

“You never lose your way home,” Hill quipped.

Hill’s shopping companions Thursday were Charlotte Meadows of Charleston and Janice Milam of Lewisburg.

Over at the Greenbrier Valley Welcome and Interpretive Center, manager Mary Cole Deitz said she and her staff have provided information to about 200 visitors a day since opening just last week.

“We’re expecting that to pick up as the weekend goes on,” she said. “And we have a tent at the event where we’re offering a few giveaways, and volunteers are handing out visitor guides and brochures.”

Deitz added, “It’s such an easy sell, selling people on the Greenbrier Valley. So many of them come in saying how cool this area is, how much there is to do.”

She said she’s really looking forward to Friday evening festivities planned in the surrounding communities.

“This is our first Friday event. I feel it’ll be really busy in downtown Lewisburg and White Sulphur Springs,” Deitz said. “It’s an exciting time to show folks what we have to offer.”

Like all Titleist irons, the Titleist AP2 irons have a futuristic design but the comparison stops there. With its AP2, Titleist moved on to combine multi-materials – steel body, elastomer bar, tungsten nickel sole, and aluminum cavity plate. The mix of materials make traditionalists suspicious but it has the traditional feel purists approve. The price is not high, but it could be better if you can find the AP2 for sale at discount golf prices in the shops.

Kyle Gallo Needed To Think About The Last Time He Won A Golf Tournament

Thursday, July 29th, 2010

It took Kyle Gallo a moment to come up with the answer. One of the state’s best golfers, Gallo needed to think about the last time he won a golf tournament.

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example: Callaway Diablo Edge Driver, XXIO MP600 Driver, Callaway X-22 Irons Left Handed, Callaway Big Bertha Diablo irons, taylormade r9 superdeep tp driver

It had been 13 months since securing a victory at the Cape Cod Open. But Gallo’s drought came to an end Wednesday when he captured the 76th Connecticut Open by 3 shots over Evan Beirne at The Country Club of Fairfield. Gallo, a Berlin resident shot a 1-over-par 71 in the final round for a three-round total of 10-under 200.

“It is always nice to win a tournament. What it means to me now is all the things I have been doing the past four, five months have been right. That’s the most important thing,” Gallo said.

It was the fourth Open title for Gallo, 35, tying him with John Golden (1932-35). Gallo won his other titles in 1998 (Ellington Ridge CC), 2000 (CC of Fairfield) and 2004 (Mill River CC) and has finished second four other times.

“When I look back on it, I’m sure it will be a tremendous accomplishment,” Gallo said. “I will have to settle in for a few weeks to see what it really means to me. It’s nice to get it over with.”

Gallo has spent more time practicing this year than playing. He’s been fine-tuning his game at Hop Meadow CC in Simsbury. This

See Open, C2

week was the first time he really reaped the benefits of his hard work.

And as meaningful as the fourth crown may be to Gallo someday, it is not his current focus. His sights are set on another shot at the PGA Tour Qualifying School. He missed by 1 shot in 2004.

Gallo plans on heading down south in the fall to get ready for the three stages of Q school that begin in October.

The $10,000 first-place check will help the cause (Q school entry fee is $4,500). That purse was not in doubt Wednesday. The nearest pro was Jim Fitzpatrick from the Course at Yale 8 shots back. But the title was in doubt during the final round.

Leading Cody Palladino by 6 heading in, Gallo snap-hooked his opening tee shot. He went on to bogey the par-5 hole. Palladino birdied and the lead was down to 4.

“I equate that to a little bit of nerves,” Gallo said. “I very rarely see the left side of the golf course.”

Palladino, who is a senior at Baylor University and also a Berlin resident, missed several birdie opportunities on the front nine to get closer, including one at the par-5 8th when Gallo bogeyed that hole, too. Gallo followed up with another bogey on the par-3 ninth and the lead was just 3.

On the par-5 10th hole, Palladino reached the front fringe in 2 while Gallo was just short. While Gallo got up and down for birdie, Palladino struggled to make a par, falling behind by 4 again. He never got any closer.

“I would have rather been where he was than where I was (on 10),” Palladino said.

Said Gallo: “When I went bogey-bogey and was fortunate enough to birdie (10), that kind of put the mindset at a different place to where if I hold onto to 10-under, I felt pretty comfortable no one was going to catch that.”

Interestingly, Gallo said the turning point for him came on the par-3 11th when the group was warned for so play. The threesome was more than two holes behind the second-to-last group.

“When we got put on the clock, I was able to establish some form of rhythm, keep things moving, not stop and go,” said Gallo, who parred his final eight holes.

In that group was Beirne, the man with the course record 58 at New Haven CC. He already had six birdies in his round (2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12) Wednesday to move into second place. Had he not double-bogeyed the par-4 fifth hole, who knows what would have happened.

Beirne, a senior at St. John’s, also had a handful of missed birdie chances down the stretch, including a four-footer on the 17th. But his 4-under 66 gave him his best finish in this event.

“I was trying to shoot as low as I could,” Beirne said. “I couldn’t control what he was doing. If I made a few birdies to get within 3 or 4 which I did, I hoped it would put some pressure on him. But I couldn’t execute down the stretch. … First would have been better but low amateur is pretty good.”
