The Pittsburgh retailer said it would close its two Golf Galaxy stores in the state as part of a companywide cost-cutting measure.
The 15,000-square-foot stores in Chandler and Tucson employ about 20 people.
They are the latest in a string of retail outlets that have closed in the past two years as a result of the housing-market collapse and lingering economic downturn.

The two locations, the only Golf Galaxy outlets in Arizona, are among 12 underperforming stores that Dick’s plans to close in the third quarter. The company now operates 91 Golf Galaxy stores in 31 states.
The stores offer a broad range of golf equipment, apparel and accessories in addition to lessons, custom-club fitting, tee times and other golf-related products and services.
Dick’s Chairman and CEO Edward Stack said the decision to open the affected Golf Galaxy stores was made by a previous management team and that they either produced inadequate sales, had leases that were too expensive, or both.
Besides Golf Galaxy, Dick’s owns 425 signature Dick’s Sporting Goods stores in 42 states, including five in metro Phoenix and one in Tucson. Those stores have complete golf departments and will pick up the slack when the Golf Galaxy locations close.
Golf Galaxy could eventually come back into the market, though, and has been considering Scottsdale, where it perceives consumers are more golf-oriented.
