Golf Is As Big At Falmouth As Any Other Sport

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

It may not be the first sport that comes to mind when you think of high school athletics, but golf is as big at Falmouth as any other sport. And like most other sports at the high school, the team is very successful. Halfway through the 2010 season, the squad is 6-3 on right on track for a postseason berth.

“We have had a great year to this point,” says head coach Rich Mason. “They have responded well to everything and I am happy where we are at the halfway point.”

Golf has a 16-game schedule, and you must have at least a .500 record at the end of the season to make the postseason tournament.

“My goal was to make the postseason, and we’re right on track to do it,” says Mason. “But if we play to our potential, we could do even better.”

The team is a blend of youth and experience with four seniors, one junior and four sophomores making up the squad’s top nine players. Eight play in a varsity match.

Senior co-captains Andrew Kelly and Griffin Guerin both return from last season and will be counted on to be team leaders both on and off the course this year. Other seniors are P.J. Moore, who is playing his first season with the varsity, and Kevin Robinson, who has seen varsity action each of the last two seasons.

Junior Justin Taylor is in his third year with the varsity.

Last season, Durham Ghelfi, then a freshman, saw time with the varsity. Now a sophomore, Ghelfi is “one of the top two players” according to Mason. Other starting sophomores are Sean Dugas and Matt Kinchla. Ryan Lino has also seen some time with the varsity unit.

Falmouth needs just two more wins to qualify for the postseason and Mason is confident his squad will be able to do that. “I think we have a great shot at making the tournament again this year,” says Mason. “Unless something drastic happens, I expect that we will.”

Three of Falmouth’s final five matches are on the road. Going on the road provides a unique challenge in golf.

“For the most part, the tennis court is a tennis court and a football field is a football field,” says Mason. “But in golf, each course is unique and many teams have great home course advantages. One in particular he mentioned as an advantage is Sandwich, who beat Falmouth there last week.

“That is a very tough course and those kids know how to play it well,” he says.

Mason, is in his fourth year as the varsity head coach, missed the postseason his first year but made it each of the last two and says it’s all about hitting your stride at the right time of the season.

“You want to be hot at the end of the season, which for golf is the middle of October,” he says. “You want to play well all year, but it doesn’t do you much good at the end if you start hot, but finish cold.”

One thing the coach points out that can lead to an end-of-year slump is burnout since many of the Clippers play a lot of golf in the summer and then come right into the school year and start back up. Whenever possible, Mason tries to make up for that. “Fridays we try to do some light practices,” he says. “We just go out there and hit some balls, and have putting contests and that sort of thing.”

While there is no official junior varsity program, Mason keeps as many kids as possible on the squad all season. However, he couldn’t do that without some help, since there is no official JV coach. “I rely on volunteers like Peter Kallagher, a teacher at the Lawrence School, to come out and help,” says Mason. “I also have great support from the parents.”

Anything can happen in the final half of the season, but it looks as though Falmouth is in great shape to make the post season. “We are hoping to be playing our best golf of the year going into the playoffs,” says Mason. “But this is just a great group of kids. I enjoy coaching them; no headaches at all.”

Falmouth is home Thursday against D-Y.

Keith Humerickhouse walked off the links at Atlantic Golf Club on Tuesday

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

A slew of text messages awaited Keith Humerickhouse as he walked off the links at Atlantic Golf Club on Tuesday.

The heavily tattooed lefty had just finished up an impressive run at the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, and his golfing cronies back at his home course — Glenwood Springs Golf Club — had been following his exploits attentively.

“As soon as I turned my phone on, I had 15 to 20 text messages saying, ‘Keep your head up. We’re proud of you,’” Humerickhouse said in a Wednesday phone interview. “It made me feel good. I wish I could have made if farther, but there can only be one winner.”

While he didn’t win, Humerickhouse’s performance at the Bridgehampton, N.Y., event was nothing to scoff at.

The 34-year-old New Castle resident, a former professional who regained amateur status last fall, fought his way into match play after an impressive run through two rounds of stroke play on Saturday and Sunday.

He followed a 2-over-par 74 round on Saturday to shoot a 76 on Sunday. Humerickhouse’s two-day total of 150 placed him in a tie for 28th place.

The top 64 advanced to match play in the event for players 25 and older.

It took Humerickhouse 15 holes to finish off Georgia’s David Noll in the round of 64.

A battle with San Diego’s Tim Mickelson, the brother of PGA Tour superstar Phil Mickelson, awaited in Tuesday’s round of 32.

With the Mickelson name drawing the spotlight and nasty weather conditions delaying play for several hours, Humerickhouse held his own in a back-and-forth showdown.

“I was actually up in the match early and he ended up coming back and squaring the match,” Humerickhouse relayed. “Then he went ahead and then, on 18, I made a birdie and squared the match again.”

Next came a sudden-death playoff on the 577-yard first hole. Mickelson finished in four strokes for a birdie and Humerickhouse finished in five.

Just like that, Humerickhouse’s Mid-Amateur experience came to an end. For this year, anyway.

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example: Taylormade Burner XD Irons , Callaway X-24 Hot Irons , Mizuno mx1000 irons

“I definitely want to come back,” he said. “I can’t even put into words how awesome it was. It was first-class. The golf courses were incredible.”

And the weather that challenged the field in New York is something Humerickhouse won’t soon forget.

“[Tuesday] was brutal,” he said. “I can’t even describe how hard it rained. I’ve never seen it rain that hard for that long. It’s incredible we even got on the golf course. The course was underwater. It’s amazing how well that place drained.”

All dried out and finished with tournament play on Wednesday, Humerickhouse remained in New York to ride out the rest of his itinerary. So he was checking out the sights, right?

Kind of.

Humerickhouse and caddy Jeff Shreeve tried to score a round at the prestigious Bethpage Black course in Farmingdale, N.Y.

“That didn’t go as well,” Humerickhouse joked, “so we’re on the road to try and play somewhere else.”

Such is life for Humerickhouse, whose professional aspirations were halted a few years ago.

“I enjoyed playing golf professionally, but I just basically ran out of money,” the former teaching pro at River Valley Ranch shared. “It got too expensive.”

So Humerickhouse, a Southern California native who moved to Colorado in 1995, started a hardwood flooring business in late 2007. All the while, he never stopped playing golf.

Once his amateur status was reinstated, the serious play began anew.

“I love the competition,” he said. “I’m still very competitive. I haven’t lost any of that.”

Humerickhouse parlayed that competitive fire into quite the 2010 run. He won three high-profile regional events this summer — the Colorado West Amateur, the Rocky Mountain Open and the Colorado Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship — before heading east for the Mid-Amateur.

“It’s been a good summer,” he said.

One that’s certainly seized the attention of his buddies back in Glenwood, the same ones who have flooded his phone with messages the past few days.

“I don’t know if Glenwood Springs has had anybody do what he just did,” Glenwood Springs Golf Club head professional Greg Gortsema said. “I don’t know. In my 21 years here, no one’s done what he’s done. … He’s just on an incredible roll.”

“I wanted to represent Colorado to the best of my ability,” Humerickhouse said. “And, obviously, I wanted to represent the Western Slope because there’s nobody from the Western Slope over there.

“I’ve had a lot of text messages and everybody telling me, ‘Keep it going. We’re watching.’”

Jim Furyk Won Not Just The Tour Championship But Also The FedEx Cup

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

With his hat on backwards to keep the rain out of his eyes, Jim Furyk sunk a two and a half foot putt on the 18th green to win not just the Tour Championship but also the FedEx Cup. Normally calm and collected, Furyk let out a roar of domination as he threw the winning ball into the crowd. Back in Tucson, his former collegiate coach Rick LaRose did something similar.

“I yelled at the TV, ‘We didn’t come all this way to layup’,” said LaRose. He was referring to Furyk’s clutch bunker shot that preceded the winning putt.

“I said that to him at the NCAA’s in ‘92,” LaRose continued. “He hit a ball in a bush off the tee on the very first hole. He had an 8 iron to the green. He said, ‘Coach should I chip this out? What should I do?’ I said, ‘Jimmy, we didn’t come all the way to lay up. Knock it on the green.’ He did and we won the championship.”

This past weekend, Furyk used the same bravado to claim the 10 million dollar prize awarded to whoever wins the FedEx Cup title. Not bad for a man whose chances dropped in August after he slept in and consequently missed his Pro Am tee time at the Barclays resulting in a disqualification from the first round of the Fed Ex Cup tournament.

“He’s an athlete,” said LaRose.” He’s a competitor. Jimmy would just like to beat your brains out for a nickel if he could. He’ll give you all you want.”

Furyk, as it turns out, is also generous. Wednesday, two days prior to the beginning of the 2010 Ryder Cup which he’ll be playing in, Furyk donated 25,000 dollars to his alma mater, the University of Arizona. The money will be used in conjecture with the PGA of America’s Play Golf America University.

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example: taylormade r9 superdeep tp driver , Callaway X-22 Irons Left Handed , Callaway Diablo Edge Fairway Woods

“If you ever had to have a son,” said LaRose, “you’d love to have Jim Furyk as your son. He’s just a great kid. He’s an all around good person.”

And a pretty darn good golfer. Thursday marks day one of competition of the Ryder Cup where Furyk will join the likes of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and team captain Corey Pavin in an attempt to make it back to back wins over Rory McIlroy, Paul Casey, and Team Europe. The match play format of the tournament should play to Furyk’s strengths.

“I love him in that scenario,” said LaRose. He would know. After all, with Furyk’s help, Arizona captured the 1992 NCAA national championship in a match play format.

“There’s nothing I don’t like about Jimmy’s game,” said LaRose. “A lot of people get caught up in mechanics. Techniques. Style points. There’s none of that in golf. All there is, is low score wins. Get the ball in the hole in the fewest number of shots. He’s done good at that.”

He certainly has. His win at the Tour Championship rounded out his total victories in 2010 to 3. Furyk’s name is being tossed around a potential PGA Player of the year. But first there’s the matter of the Ryder Cup, being held across the pond at the Celtic Manor in Wales..

“I just told him to put this week out of your mind and try to concentrate on the Ryder Cup,” said LaRose. “He said that’s what they’re looking forward to doing.”

We’re looking forward to watching.

First round of the Ryder Cup begins Friday.

Captain Ian Woosnam Publicly Slated The BBC

Thursday, September 30th, 2010

After Europe thumped the US in the 2006 Ryder Cup, captain Ian Woosnam publicly slated the BBC for not awarding his men the Sports Personality Team of the Year award, which went to St Helens rugby league club.

Perhaps he should have noted that, first, it was a vote by the fans that determined that award, and second, Europe that year had a far better team, were expected to win and did so; you should not get awards for doing the expected.

Behind Woosnam’s displeasure lay the assumption that the Ryder Cup was such a special event that the winners, provided it is Europe, automatically deserve the accolade. That supposition appears to have evolved along with the purposeful portrayal of the tournament as something akin to war.

The structure of the Ryder Cup creates a number of interesting variables. Chief among these is that the US compete as a country outside their own borders, which is not the case in their three major sports. It is interesting to see how essentially solo performers react when asked to be part of a team. Moreover, the way in which the pairings and singles matches ebb and flow during the four days is fascinating, but let’s get one thing straight – this is a golf competition, not some form of superpower challenge with attendant political ramifications.

This 2010 contest has the potential to be memorable, but for the wrong reasons. The choice of Tiger Woods in the US team has given some writers what they wanted: another chance to try to needle Woods into giving an undiplomatic reaction to a plethora of regurgitated and irrelevant questions about his personal life, many of which have the most tenuous connections to golf.

In a press conference on Tuesday one reporter showed not a shred of respect for Woods when he sneeringly put the following question: “You don’t win majors any more, you don’t win regular tournaments, you’re about to be deposed as world No 1… is the Ryder Cup now your most important thing now you’re almost an ordinary golfer?”

When Woods was faced with this impertinence he should have left the conference as no sportsman should have to put up with insulting behaviour. He stayed and tried to laugh it off because he knew that had he departed he would have been pilloried.

Had something similar been put to Sir Alex Ferguson about Manchester United the questioner would have got the answer he deserved. Had anyone mockingly asked me something similar in my playing days he would have got a righteous slap.

I’m glad that you can visit our website, there are series of golf clubs, for example: Callaway X Series , Callaway FT Series , Taylormade R7 Series

Nobody is asking for sycophantic toadying, but Woods is entitled to expect the basic courtesy that should be given to any interviewee; it is common decency.

Another reporter tried to generate sensation by asking what reaction Woods had seen from the US team’s wives given that they play such a large part in the Ryder Cup. A large part; are they now involved in the planning and playing? And there were we just thinking they dressed smartly and cheered on their men.

There is sufficient rivalry, both on a team and a personal level, without the need to manufacture a personal spat between Woods and Rory McIlroy. The young Ulsterman’s original comment, that he would not mind playing against Woods, came after Woods had shot 18 over par at Bridgestone.

When facing the media this week McIlroy was again peppered with questions about Woods and stressed the context of his comments. When pressed, McIlroy said nothing that could justify the claim made by the media that he had continued to stoke the supposed rivalry. What this should make plain to McIlroy is that no matter how neutral he thinks he is being, anything that he says can and will be twisted to suit the ends of those pursuing their own agenda.

Meanwhile, rumbling in the background is the story that most people knew, but which has only just appeared in print, concerning Colin Montgomerie’s injunction to stop an individual from making revelations in the press about his private life.

Previously unreported, the existence of the court order emerged following revelations by a paper that had not been served with the order – presenting the opportunity to destabilise Montgomerie and his team by sly innuendo and whispering.

The details of what the individual might reveal has been the source of speculation for weeks on the internet, via email and text; hardly anybody I know does not have some version to relate. If the details are ever revealed, and are in line with what is rumoured, all I can say is that this is yet another case of prurience over something that has nothing to do with sport and has no bearing on Montgomerie’s suitability to be Ryder Cup captain. Will this stop another frenzy of lurid and irrelevant questions or will we be forced to endure the journalistic equivalent of a bout of third form sniggering?

Given the minutely technical nature of golf and the added format of team play, there are ample sporting queries to make of the best players in the world, yet we appear doomed to listen to banal and petty questions about personal matters.

I do not understand why people whose lives are entwined with golf and who love the game want to wallow in this sort of nonsense. Is the psychological drama and tension not sufficient? Surely the delicate balance of proven greatness as against poor form is sufficiently absorbing as you watch Woods and Harrington try to resurrect their former brilliance.

If the media wants to serve its consumers, it should look at the way the public reacted to the golfers. It was not surprising or overly polite for them to cheer Woods and others, because they are there just for the golf.

They also understand something the media does not: that the players are human and make human mistakes, but are still entitled to human respect.

Liberty Fired The Third-best Round Of The Final Day

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

Liberty fired the third-best round of the final day, but it wasn’t good enough to help the Flames climb up the leaderboard. Liberty carded a two-over par 290 and finished in seventh place at the VCU Shootout in a 54-hole event finished up on Tuesday.

Scores were much higher during the final round, as first-day leader UNC Wilmington nearly let a seven-stroke lead vanish on the par-72, Hermitage Country Club course.

After firing a 12-under par 276 to close out play on Monday, the Seahawks carded a 10-over par 298 today, which allowed them to hold on for a one-shot victory with a two-under par 862 (288-276-298).

The only other team to finish the 54-hole event in red figures was Wake Forest, as the Demon Deacons fell just a shot shy of the team victory. Wake Forest finished the event with a one-under par 863 (285-289-289) after carding the second-best 18-hole total on Tuesday.

Liberty completed its second tournament of the fall in seventh place, as the Flames finished with a 12-over par 876 (295-291-290).

Liberty’s two-over par 290 on Tuesday was the third-best 18-hole total and helped the Flames finish ahead of eighth-place Virginia Tech (13-over par 877), ninth-place Iowa State (14-over par 878) and host VCU (16-over par 880), who finished in 10th place.

Sophomore Max McKay posted his second sub-par round to finish the event in a tie for 10th-place with an ever-par 216 (70-75-71). After opening with consecutive pars, McKay would only card one additional par during the next 10 holes.

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example: Callaway X-24 Hot Irons , Taylormade Burner XD Irons , Honma Beres MG 803 Irons

During the stretch, he had a double bogey, three bogeys and five birdies, while a birdie on his 15th hole of the day, a par-5, allowed him to post the one-under par 71 and claim a share of 10th place.

Robert Karlsson was one of five golfers in the 78-man field to break 70 on Tuesday, as the sophomore fired a three-under par 69. The score, which was aided by four birdies and bogey during the final round, allowed Karlsson to finish the event tied for 17th place with a two-over par 218 (76-73-69).

Chase Marinell posted his second Top 25 finish of his early collegiate career, as the rookie finished the event tied for 23rd place with a three-over par 219 (74-69-76). A birdie on No. 2 and an eagle on the par-5, No. 5 hole trimmed a five-over score back three strokes, but Marinell dropped shots on his last two holes to close the event with a four-over par 76.

Preston Dembowiak, the reigning Big South Golfer of the Week, struggled to regain his form from Liberty’s last tournament and finished tied for 37th place with a seven-over par 233 (75-74-74). The senior opened the day with bogeys on two of his first three holes, followed by three more bogeys and three birdies to finish the final round with a two-over par 74.

Ian McConnell, Liberty’s final golfer in the event, finished the day in the same spot he started, as the rookie posted his second-straight 76 to finish in 63rd place with a 13-over par 299 (77-76-76). The freshman struggled out of the gates, as a double bogey-bogey stretch left him five-over after eight holes. However, he was able to regroup with birdies on holes No. 1 and No. to help him post a four-over par 76 on the closing day.

The Flames will return to the golf links next weekend, when Liberty travels to Daufuskie Island, S.C., to participate in the Reese Jones Intercollegiate.

The Michigan State hosted event, which will be contested at Haig Point Golf Course, is a two-day, 54-hole event that starts on Monday.

The Tema Country Golf Club Have Beaten Their Ikeja Counterparts

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

The Tema Country Golf Club have beaten their Ikeja counterparts in the first ever friendly golf competition between the two clubs in the West African giant nations of Ghana and Nigeria.

Played over the weekend, Tema took advantage of their home territory to outplay and outscore their guests, 30-18 overall to win the giant trophy at stake.

Tema won the first day of competition 11.5 to the 8.5 of Ikeja on Saturday and after completing the rout with a 18.5 to 12.5 result on Sunday, the club’s Captain Leonard Kwaku Okyere could not help but admit that playing at home meant they had no choice than to win.

“You know it is a phenomenon in Africa that once you host you have to win and you saw how we failed with the football. But with golf, its an individual game, involving a lot of skill and once you are on your ground, you have the advantage.

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example: Callaway Diablo Edge Fairway Woods , Tourstage Bridgestone ViQ driver , Honma Beres MG 803 Irons

“Basically we had to win today. But trust me, even when we go there, we will pursue them and win” Mr. Okyere exclusively told SportsInGhana.com .

But Shola Giwa, Captain of Ikeja Golf Club, shares a different view, stating out that his side didn’t want to spoil the atmosphere of the good hosts that Tema have been over the weekend of playing golf in a competitive friendly spirit.

“We acknowledge the good hospitality of Tema and we promise to do better when they come to Ikeja,” Mr. Giwa admitted in his closing speech.

He added: “We lost gallantly and I tell you we will win the trophy in Ikeja . We didn’t want to disgrace the Ghanaians and take their trophies away. But when they come to our home territory, we will have no mercy.”

According to Ebenezer Adablanu, Manager of the Tema Country Golf Club, the idea of the competition is establish friendly relations between the two golf clubs in the two West African countries.

Discussions are already underway for Tema to reciprocate the visit of Ikeja by going there as early as the very first quarter of next year. All after the proclaimed success of this maiden event and last Sunday’s cake-cutting to signify the new union between the two golf clubs.

Mr. Adablanu further hailed the success of staging the two day competition.

the Ping/Golfweek Preview at Karsten Creek Golf Club

Wednesday, September 29th, 2010

The Oklahoma State men’s golf team went wire-to-wire at the Ping/Golfweek Preview, winning the prestigious event Tuesday at Karsten Creek Golf Club.

“There are a lot of times the home course can be a big advantage, but it also has pressure because everybody thinks you should win,” Cowboys coach Mike McGraw said afterward. “You come in with a pretty good ranking and they expect you to win.

“Most people think that is what would bother you, but to me it is not what other people’s expectations are anyway … I think we accomplished the goal we set out for and it didn’t have anything to do with anybody else’s expectations, which feels good.”

OSU has won three straight Preview titles and six championships overall in the 22-year history of the event.

The Cowboys finished with a 14-over-par total of 878, four shots ahead of UCLA. Georgia was third at 883.

He was the only player in the 73-player field to finish under par on the 7,449-yard layout.

The Cowboys, who entered the final round with a one-shot lead, were led by U.S. Amateur champion Peter Uihlein, who closed with a 70 for the fourth-runner-up finish.

OSU senior Kevin Tway finished with a 72 and placed fifth, while sophomore Drew Page tied for 16{+t}{+h} in his first collegiate start.

Freshman Talor Gooch, the first-round leader, closed with a 77 and finished tied for 21{+s}{+t}.

The Cowboys’ next tournament begins Oct. 11 at the Jack Nicklaus Invitational in Columbus, Ohio.

The Badgers Completed Their Record-setting Tournament By Winning The Badger Invitational

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

The Badgers completed their record-setting tournament by winning the Badger Invitational, which Wisconsin hosted at University Ridge Golf Course.

Wisconsin tied the Badger Invitational team mark with a 282-300-297–879 to finish two strokes ahead of a charging Augusta State’s 304-286-291–881. Iowa (894) finished third, followed by Xavier (902) and Southern Methodist (920). The Badgers won the Badger Invitational for only the second time in its 17-year history, and the first time since 1983.

“I’m thrilled with the victory,” coach Todd Oehrlein said. “Early in the fall season this makes a big difference, especially from a confidence standpoint. We’ve had excellent practices and focus, so this was a great start for us. Augusta State has a traditionally good program. They played fantastic the last two rounds and really made us work to earn it, which made the event more exciting because it was extremely competitive.”

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example: Callaway Diablo Edge Fairway Woods , Honma Beres MG 803 Irons , Mizuno mx1000 irons

UW senior Carly Werwie won the tournament with a school and Badger Invitational 54-hole record 71-69-73–213.

“We’re really excited for her,” Oehrlein said. “It’s her first tournament victory individually, but she’s been close a couple of times and played very well. She’s been very relaxed and composed. She’s shown the kind of maturity which is exactly what you hope to see from your seniors.”

Xavier University’s Audrey Fellmeth was two strokes back with a 72-69-74–215. Augusta State’s Casey Kennedy and Natalie Wille tied for third at an even-par 216, and Wisconsin’s Lindsay Danielson, who shot a 54-hole personal best 68-76-74–218, finished fifth tied for fifth with Southern Methodist’s Amy Ruengmateekhun.

Wisconsin’s 54-hole score of 879 ties the Badger Invitational record set by Purdue in 2005. Wisconsin’s 18-hole score of 282 marked a school and Badger Invitational record, while their 36-hole score of 582 set a Badger Invitational Record. Additionally, Carly Werwie’s 54-hole score of 213 set a new school and Badger Invitational record, breaking the mark of 215 which was set by Wisconsin teammate Jessie Gerry in 2008.

Wisconsin’s Alyssa Elliott finished tied for 15th, posting a 73-75-77–225. Jessie Gerry finished 18th with a 70-81-76–227. Freshman Kris Yoo finished tied for 19th with a 74-80-74–228.

Playing as an individual, Alexis Nelson finished tied for seventh with a 73-74-74–221. Ellie Arkin, also playing as an individual, finished tied for 34th with a 75-80-80–235.

“This should definitely give us confidence going forward,” Oehrlin said. “The players handled everything very well. We saw today that we had preparation early in the round and finished strong. The fact that we had the right frame of mind and our approach was rewarded was great to see.”

Wisconsin is back in action on October 4-5 at the Johnny Imes Invitational, held at the Club at Old Hawthorne in Columbia, Missouri. UW first of 18 teams in that tournament a year ago posting a 908.

the Northwestern Windon Memorial tournament at the North Shore Country Club

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

The men’s golf team traveled west this weekend and finished 16th at the Northwestern Windon Memorial tournament at the North Shore Country Club in Glenview, Ill.

Princeton finished 54 above par as a team, trailing tournament winner Michigan by 52 strokes. The Tigers as a whole were fairly consistent in their performances on the front and back nines, as the Orange and Black scored three shots better on the back nines than in the first halves of their rounds over the course of the tournament.

“This tournament was a really good test for us,” senior captain Eric Salazar said. “We didn’t play as well as we would’ve liked, but it was another great learning experience.”

Through two days and three rounds, junior Evan Harmeling had Princeton’s highest individual placement of 40th in the tournament, while the team as a whole placed 16th out of 17 squads. Harmeling’s final score was 8 over par.

Harmeling managed to improve his score each round, resulting in a third round that ended 2 under par.

“Evan played an inspiring final round which we can definitely build on going forward,” Salazar said.

Harmeling’s stroke average last season was 75.70 and his top finish was eighth place.

Follow-up individual placements for the Tigers included Salazar, who placed 57th, and sophomore Bernie D’Amato, who finished in 78th place at 20 over par.

While Salazar started with a rough second round, he rallied and got 3 over par for the third round.

Lion Kim from Michigan eventually took first place, finishing 6 under par. Kim won on a close margin, as he was only two strokes ahead of second-place finisher Bo Hoag from Ohio State.

The Wolverines and the Buckeyes went on to complete the tournament first and second overall, as Michigan edged Ohio State by one stroke on Monday afternoon.

Purdue’s Erich Johnston recorded the only hole-in-one of the tournament on a beautiful 189-yard shot from the par-3 16th hole.

The Northwestern Memorial had a broader national pool and more teams than the McLaughlin Invitational that Princeton played in last weekend, where the squad finished second out of 15 teams.

“We saw firsthand what it takes to play at the national championship level this weekend,” Salazar said. “We still have some work to do if we’re going to compete at that level, but we found out that the gap between us and the best teams in the country isn’t as big as we thought.”

The team will participate in the Big Five Classic in two weeks in Plymouth Meeting, Pa. It will be important for the Tigers to rally in this tournament, as it is their second-to-last tournament in the fall season.

The Profile Of The Sport Has Never Been Higher With The Ryder Cup teeing Off

Tuesday, September 28th, 2010

Golf clubs in Wales are battling a long term fall in membership with a warning some may not survive.

The profile of the sport has never been higher with the Ryder Cup teeing off at the Celtic Manor in three days time.

But many clubs are increasingly looking to visitors to keep going due to an ageing and declining membership.

Around 40 new nine and 18 hole courses have opened in Wales in the last 20 years with fears there are now too many chasing too few members.

The Golf Union of Wales said it was working with clubs to help them tackle the problem and to increase participation in the sport.

Last year it undertook a major survey on the health of Welsh clubs and said it remained a fair reflection of 2010.

A total of 107 of the 159 affiliated clubs took part with 69% reporting falling membership and just 13% saying it was increasing.

Only 8% said they were not actively seeking new members and only 8% had a waiting list.

Almost a third said annual income had decreased since the year 2000.

Keith Lloyd, chief executive of the Golf Club Managers’ Association, said it was not just a problem in Wales, but across the UK and other countries including the Unites States and New Zealand.

“There’s an awful lot more people playing but not joining golf clubs,” he said.

“It’s a trend which has happened over the last 10 years but the last three or four years have been particularly bad.”

Mr Lloyd said it was golfers in the 25 to 40-year-old age bracket that no longer tended to join clubs but played on a pay-per-round basis – they have been termed ‘nomadic golfers’.

Research by the association found while most clubs were still on a sound financial footing around one in 20 were in serious trouble.

Mr Lloyd, who has run clubs in Aberdare and Cardiff, said since the late 1980s over 800 new courses had been built in the UK and he believed there were around 100 too many.

“Sadly, yes, I can see some closing,” he said.

“My real worry is none of us really know the answer because we are not sure where it [the declining trend in membership] is going to stop.”

In Wales around 40 new nine and 18 hole courses have opened in the last 20 years – including the Twenty Ten Course where the Ryder Cup will be played.

Hannah Fitzpatrick, of Golf Development Wales, established as a direct result of the successful Ryder Cup 2010 bid, said it was working to address the membership challenge as the health of golf clubs was vital to the sport.

Richard Fountain Moved Into A Tie For Third Place At The Mason Rudolph Championship

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Davidson men’s golf placed in a tie for seventh with Southern Conference foe Chattanooga in a field of 17 with a six-over par 858 (287+287+284) in the Mason Rudolph Championship, which concluded Sunday at the Vanderbilt Legends Club.

Freshman Richard Fountain (Raleigh, N.C.) moved into a tie for third place with a three-under par 68 in Saturday’s second round, but slid into a tie for 12th after shooting a two-over, 73 in the third-and-final round. Fountain finished as Davidson’s top golfer for the weekend though at 212 (71+68+73), one-under par.

Sophomore John Skeadas (Savannah, Ga.) moved up to 15th place to finish one stroke behind Fountain at 213 (72+70+71), even par. Senior Bobby Urso (Beverley Hills, Mich.) matched Skeadas’ final-round 71 to finish at 221 (tie-52nd).

Freshman Sam Echikson (Brussels, Belgium) had Davidson’s best score of the final round, a three-under 69.

Junior Jackson Taylor (Wilmington, N.C.) also competed, posting an 80 after entering the day at just two-over par.

Although Davidson posted their best team score of the tournament of 284, they were unable to move up the leader board as Middle Tennessee State jumped from eighth to fifth behind a final round 274. The Wildcats entered the day two strokes behind Chattanooga, which fired a final round 286.

Memphis rode their first-day 274 to victory, finishing at an even-par 284 in the last two rounds to total 842. Jack Belote of Memphis took medalist honors with an eight-under par 205 (66+69+70).

South Carolina (844) finished two strokes behind Memphis, and was followed by Mississippi (847), Oklahoma (848), Middle Tennessee State (850) and the hosts, Vanderbilt (856). Akron trailed Davidson with an 866 in ninth place. Southern Conference foe Western Carolina placed 15th with an 889.

Davidson will return to action October 11-12 at the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate hosted by Georgia Southern.

Nate Smith Clinched The Title For Sunday At The 2010 WNB Classic

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Midland Nate Smith’s putt on the 18th hole went west to east, from about 35 feet, the level of anticipation rising in the crowd with each roll toward the cup.

When it fell, the noise didn’t, the crowd cheering the birdie that moved him to 18-under par for the event and clinched the title for Sunday at the Nationwide Tour’s 2010 WNB Classic at Midland Country Club.

“I didn’t think it was going in until it fell,” Smith said. “I thought that it might lip out.

“To have a putt to win on 18, that’s all you can ask for. I hit a pure putt.”

Smith, from Santa Monica, Calif., earned $94,500 for his first career victory on the tour and jumped from 78th to 25th on the money list. The Top 25 at the end of the season earn PGA
Tour cards for 2011.

The finish gave Smith a two-shot victory over a trio of golfers – Alistair Presnell, Fabian Gomez and Brandt Jobe, with Jobe bogeying the final hole to drop out of a tie for the lead.

Tommy Gainey, Matt Davidson and Darron Stiles were another shot back at 16-under par.

“I’ve got a flood of emotions right now; I don’t know whether to cry or scream,” Smith said. “To be able to come through in the clutch like that is the best feeling in the world.

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example: Callaway Diablo Edge Irons , Callaway X-24 Hot Irons , Taylormade Burner XD Irons

“I saw Brandt’s putt lip out on 18 and me and my caddy figured that was for par. So I knew I was going to have a chance.”

Smith made it a tougher chance when his drive on the final hole found the trees and he was forced to improvise a shot that would give him a chance to stay in front.

With 221 yards to the hole, he was looking for any opening and he and his caddy found one.

“There was a gap and my caddy went to check to see if there was any out of bounds to the right,” Smith said. “I hit a 3 iron about 30 yards right of the green and it came down on it about 35 feet from the hole, the best result we could have expected.”

For the longest time Sunday, it looked as if Jobe was going to run away with the tournament.

Starting the round at 12-under, two shots behind leader Darren Stiles, Jobe birdied the second, third and fourth holes and then added another at No. 9 to make the turn in 4-under 32.

A birdie at the Par 5, No. 12, pushed him to 17-under par for the day and, at that time, two shots in front of his nearest pursuer. But as Jobe was cooling off, Smith was heating up with a putter he calls “Black Magic.”

Also at 12-under to start the day, Smith birdied the first hole and then hit his drive on the second hole into the mesquite down the right side and we heard a rattlesnake in there, so we peeled of there pretty quickly and played my provisional,” Smith said of his errant shot. “I ended up making a birdie with the provisional, but a bogey overall.”

Smith came back to birdie No. 4, 5 and 8, along with 12 and 13 on the back nine before his winning putt fell on No. 18.

“I was shaking pretty good,” said Smith, who played most of the 2009 season on the European Tour’s Challenger Series Tour.

“I didn’t look at the scoreboard all day until after I hit my drive on No. 18. This is my greatest accomplishment as a pro.

The US Ryder Cup Team Arrives In Wales Today

Monday, September 27th, 2010

The US Ryder Cup team arrives in Wales today as the countdown to the world’s third largest sporting event begins in earnest.

The team’s plane is set to land at Cardiff Airport at 11am, where it will be greeted by two giant posters of European captain Colin Montgomerie and the slogan: “Welcome to Montgomerieshire”.

The poster will also be at Tredegar House and Llanwern Park closer to competition venue Celtic Manor Resort, as well as on two advertising vans in Cardiff and Newport.

It is part of a wider marketing drive by the Assembly Government for Wales’ first Ryder Cup, which Heritage Minister Alun Ffred Jones, described as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to put our country firmly on the map”.

John Jermine, chairman of Ryder Cup Wales 2010, told the Western Mail last night that securing the event – the culmination of 20 years of work by resort owner Sir Terry Matthews – would “transform the outlook for Wales”.

However, there was criticism yesterday of a “lack of strategic planning” by Cardiff council ahead of the tournament, with roadworks continuing to dominate the capital’s city centre.

Cardiff West MP Kevin Brennan said he was saddened by the unsightly road works which will greet Ryder Cup visitors outside Cardiff Castle.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to show Cardiff at its best, yet the council has continued to present the jewel in Cardiff’s crown at its worst,” he said.

Montgomerie and his wife, Gaynor, will be part of the welcome party at Cardiff Airport today, where he and US captain, Corey Pavin, will hold their first of the week’s many media briefings in front of the cameras.

“From previous experience, the week will be on fast-forward from the moment they touch down,” Montgomerie said.

“It will be a whirlwind of press conferences, uniform fittings, practice rounds, functions, team meetings and pairing discussions until Friday – when the battle to win back the Ryder Cup begins in earnest.”

Both teams will get their first real taste of the £16m Twenty Ten course tomorrow with an early-morning practice session followed by more media interviews.

A further practice session will take place on Wednesday ahead of the opening ceremony and announcement of the first pairings on Thursday.

But one of Europe’s stars, Ian Poulter, was already excitedly posting pictures of the inside of his room on website Twitter yesterday.

Next to a picture of a room stocked with several jumpers, polo shirts and pairs of golf shoes, Poulter wrote: “My room full of all outfits, shoes, suits, credentials, like a kid in a sweetie store.”

More than 250,000 spectators are due to flood through the resort’s gates during the week, including many high-profile figures and celebrities.

And as a result security has been very high on the agenda for the organisers.

Sir Terry Matthews, billionaire owner of the resort, told the Western Mail: “Clearly there are lots of important people coming, there are lots of very senior politicians who I’m not sure I’m even allowed to name.

“The security levels are really quite something, there’s so much work gone on behind the scenes and it’s more than I’ve ever seen for any event.”

Sir Terry spoke last week of his pride at proving doubters wrong in securing the Ryder Cup as golf fever gripped the nation.

He also described how since the tournament was awarded to Wales back in 2001 he and the tournament’s organisers have driven home the importance of creating a lasting legacy both in terms of getting more people into golf as well as increasing business and tourism revenue across the country.

He added yesterday: “We hope this will go on for decades. The rewards are already being seen – just look at Celtic Manor now, it has been full all year round even in a recession.

“Golf has proved to be more popular than ever.

“I’m even going to have to pick up some clubs now, I don’t play but I made a promise that if we were to get the Ryder Cup I would start. I may go round the Twenty Ten course but whereas Tiger would do it in around four hours it would probably take me weeks.”

Mr Jermine said: “We have always tried to make sure Wales’ first Ryder Cup leaves a long-term legacy after the event and already we are seeing this happen. Just take a look at how golf tourism has transformed since 2002. Back then Wales had about 16 million people [visiting] and this year we’re looking at 35 million.

“We’ve shown that it’s not just about the golf but the packages that are on offer throughout the country and selling these on world-class websites. It’s not just about this week. Before, Wales was considered a hidden gem in terms of golf tourism but now we’ve opened the whole world up to it.

“I recently played here with an American journalist and afterwards he asked me: ‘How come I’ve never been here before?’

“The whole event has transformed the outlook for Wales and it’s now a place for opportunities.”

In a marketing push by the Assembly Government almost 200 golf clubs across the country have been sent Ryder Cup welcome packs while, in another first, the two Severn crossings will carry Ryder Cup branding at the tolls with tee flags replacing the barriers with a welcome message.
