Jim Furyk Would Win The Tour Championship

Monday, September 27th, 2010

On a wet, dark and difficult Sunday, it all came down to making a par at the last hole. A mere par, from the deep greenside bunker at East Lake Golf Club, and Jim Furyk would win it all — The Tour Championship, the FedEx Cup, all the money, his career-best third PGA Tour title of the year and, perhaps, the player-of-the-year award.

If ever there was a task that matched the man, this was it: a tough, blue-collar day at The Tour Championship, with rain falling and grips slipping and throats tightening and players faltering. And there was Furyk, having stoically fought the elements all day, a man who was disqualified from the first playoff event for missing his pro-am starting time because an alarm didn’t go off. He was standing on wet sand with a 60-degree wedge and needed to get up and down to win $11.35 million.

That was what he did. With slightly more than 18 yards to the hole, Furyk’s shot from the sand came out low and spinning. It bounced twice, grabbed the wet green and skidded to a stop 2 ½ feet past the hole, leaving him a tap-in the 40-year-old would call “just about dummy proof.”

A soaked Furyk, his cap spun backward, brushed in the putt and let out two whoops.

Furyk’s par round of 70, anything but easy, gave him a total of 8-under-par 272 and a one-stroke victory over Luke Donald, who also shot a 70. Furyk got $1.35 million for winning the tournament and a $10 million bonus for clinching the FedEx Cup.

Donald, who holed a 100-foot birdie pitch at the 17th hole to give himself a chance, couldn’t sink a 48-foot birdie putt on No. 18.

Ryan Moore (69) of Puyallup tied for ninth and was 21st in FedEx Cup points, a combination worth a total of $428,125.

Memphis And Oklahoma Are In A Tie For The Lead For The 17-team Field

Saturday, September 25th, 2010

Continuing to ride his wave of success from the season opening tournament, true freshman Chad Ramey leads the Mississippi State men’s golf team through the first round of the Mason Rudolph Championship being played in Franklin, Tenn., at the par-71 Legends Club, following a 1-under-par effort in the opening round. The Bulldogs are in a tie for ninth with an 8-over-par opening day score 292.

Memphis and Oklahoma are in a tie for the lead for the 17-team field with a 10-under-par effort. In-state rival Ole Miss is the only team under par on the opening day with a 2-under-par 282 and is in third. SEC-foe South Carolina and host-school Vanderbilt round out the top five, while Davidson, Akron and Chattanooga stand sixth, seventh and eighth. MSU is tied with Middle Tennessee for ninth to close out the top 10.

Ramey is in a tie for 11th among the 89-member individual field and was among the leaders in par 4 scoring. Ramey also led the Bulldogs in pars made with 15.

Playing in his first tournament of the season, junior Lee Heaton notched an even-par 71 on the opening day and is tied for 16th in the individual field. Heaton also led State in birdies made with four. True freshman Axel Boasson went 2-over-par in the first round and is in a tie for 38th. Sophomores Robi Calvesbert and Brad Mason round out the Bulldog lineup with rounds of 78 and 81.

Jim Furyk Was Tied For The Lead At The PGA Tour Championship

Saturday, September 25th, 2010

This should serve as a wake-up call for Jim Furyk: He’s tied for the lead at the PGA Tour Championship, and he’s very much in the hunt for the $10 million FedEx Cup prize.

Furyk began the playoffs at No. 3 in the standings. But in the opening event at the Barclays, he was disqualified for missing his pro-am when the alarm didn’t go off. He slipped six spots and then fell to No. 11 over the past two weeks. But on Friday, Furyk played bogey-free on the back nine at East Lake in Atlanta for a 5-under-par 65, giving him a share of the 36-hole lead with Luke Donald (66).

Furyk has a chance to join Tiger Woods as the only FedEx Cup champion to miss the first playoff event, although Woods chose to skip it in his case.

“I’d like to join him with about 16 majors, too,” Furyk said. “But that doesn’t look like it’s in the cards.”

Geoff Ogilvy (67) is a stroke behind the leaders at 7-under 133. K.J. Choi shot his second straight 68 and is at 136.

Phil Mickelson’s hopes to repeat as the tournament’s winner were fading. He shot a 72 and is nine shots back.

Geoff Ogilvy Spent More Time Answering Questions About The AFL Grand

Saturday, September 25th, 2010

Geoff Ogilvy spent more time answering questions about the AFL grand final than his golf game after the second round at the Tour Championship in Atlanta on Friday.

Ogilvy was brought to the media centre after shooting a three-under-par 67 to trail leaders Jim Furyk and Luke Donald by one stroke at East Lake.

Several American journalists wanted to learn about Ogilvy’s allegiance to St Kilda, and were curious that he would stay up until 3am local time to watch the game on TV.

“You can play golf on no sleep if you haven’t been drinking,” he said.

“Drinking is what makes it hard when you get no sleep. You couldn’t do it every night – you’d get tired – but we’re all semi-athletes.

“You can play golf off three or four hours of sleep.”

Ogilvy was momentarily flustered when he noticed the female stenographer recording the interview wearing a Collingwood t-shirt.

“You’ve got to be joking,” he said, before composing himself.

Ogilvy has a relatively benign third round tee time of 11.15am local time, but he’s not likely to get much sleep, no matter who wins the grand final.

As for the golf, Ogilvy mixed some good stuff with some pretty ordinary shots, carding seven birdies and four bogeys.

“It probably wasn’t quite as stress-free today as yesterday,” he said.

“I hit a few loose tee shots, but I hit a lot of really good shots too and I’m putting well at the moment, so it added up to three-under.”

American Furyk (65) and Englishman Donald (66) led on eight-under 132, with Ogilvy alone in third place on seven-under.

Jason Day (69) was best of the other Australians, six shots behind.

Day, by the way, is most unlikely to play in Australia at the end of the year. He will undergo sinus surgery on October 14 and wants to focus primarily on recovering for the 2011 season.

Asked whether Australia was out, he said: “At the moment it is (but) I’m not going to say it’s out-out.

“It would be great to go back but I really want to be 100 per cent going into 2011.

“I hate not being able to prepare for a tournament. If I’m going to go back I really want to try and do well.”

In The Last 48 Hours There Have Been Two Separate Incidents Involving Golf Carts

Friday, September 24th, 2010

In the last 48 hours there have been two separate incidents involving golf carts that have resulted in the deaths of two people.

Edie Phillips of Tennessee died Tuesday night and Henry Messer of Indiana died late last evening.

Beech Bend Park Owner Dallas Jones says the park has signs posted warning people about driving safely.

“Well, we’ve got signs posted to be careful and drive at your own risk and this type thing and that’s about all you can do is put signs up and warn people,” He said.

Kentucky State Police is investigating the two accidents.

Right know they are being ruled just that, accidents, but they are checking to see if alcohol was a factor.

“As of right now I don’t exactly know who was drinking, whether it was the driver or the passenger, but I understand that alcohol did play a part in these separate events,” Trooper Charles Swiney said.

Hi,everyone! There are some new golf clubs in our store, for example: Mizuno mx1000 irons , Callaway X-24 Hot Irons , Taylormade Burner XD Irons

He also said that just because it wasn’t a car, this is more proof drinking and driving don’t mix.

“If you wouldn’t drink or drive in your vehicle or a pick-up truck. Don’t drink and drive on a golf cart because it may not be going twenty miles an hour but it’s still a vehicle in motion an alcohol effects sometimes make you do things you wouldn’t normally do,” he said.

Jones said this isn’t the first or even second time, but third, that something like this has happened.

He says people need to ride in golf carts the way they were made to be ridden.

“The big thing is, just don’t stand on the back on them, they’ve got to sit down on a golf cart and used it the way it was designed to be used,” he said.

Despite the two accidents the park still held their Harley Davidson drag race today and Jones expected a good turnout.

Both Jones and KSP say these are two tragic accidents and KSP wants to remind everyone to be safe when riding vehicles like golf carts.
