The Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown Tuesday

The Kent State women’s golf team rallied during the second round at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown Tuesday, as all five golfers improved on their scores from Monday’s first round to move up to third place in the 17-team event.

With weather conditions favorable for low scores at Boulder Creek Golf Course, the Golden Flashes took advantage to move up in the field. All four scores that counted for Kent State’s total were under par, helping the Flashes post the third-lowest team score for the second round.

The team’s score of 277 on Tuesday ranks second-lowest in program history, one shot off the team record of 276 set during the 2006 season.

“I’m really proud of how the team came back today,” said head coach Mike Morrow. “To shoot 11-under par as a team is a good accomplishment.”

Senior Martina Gavier (Cordoba, Argentina), ranked 20th by Golfweek/Sagarin heading into the event, stands alone in fourth place after shooting a four-under 68 on Tuesday. After starting with back-to-back bogeys, Gavier righted the ship with two birdies on the front nine and four on the back.

Also on the move was freshman Erin Hawe (Walton, New Zealand), who shaved 12 strokes off her opening round with a three-under 69, her second round in the 60s of the fall season. Hawe went bogey-free for her first 17 holes, with five birdies on her card, before a double-bogey six on the par-4 No. 18 capped her round.

Junior Mandy Morrow (Kent, Ohio) clipped six strokes off her first round effort on Monday, carding a three-under 69 for her best score as a collegian. With two birdies apiece on both the front and back nines and just one bogey on the day, Morrow is now tied for 17th overall.

Classmate Mercedes Germino (Necochea, Argentina) was the final scorer for Kent State Tuesday with a one-under 71, moving her into a tie for 32nd place. Three birdies countered two bogeys for a well-rounded effort.

Although junior Shamira Marshall (Macedonia, Ohio) was unable to break par Tuesday, her two-over 74 was a one-stroke improvement from her opening round effort. Marshall is now tied for 45th.

Individually, senior Sarah Bradley (Cambridge, New Zealand) is also tied for 45th after scoring a four-over 76 Tuesday. She ranks second among unattached golfers.

Kent State will conclude the three-day event Wednesday; it will also wrap up the fall portion of the Golden Flashes’ season.

Golf is a lot like other sports,” said Morrow. “We really want to finish strong in the fall, and a good round tomorrow will really build momentum into the spring season.”
