Rory McIlroy won the US Open, and he made it look like a breeze. He didn’t break Tiger Woods’s record for largest victory, but that was about the only record McIlroy didn’t break. He finished at 16 under par with a total score of 268, both easily records for the US Open using Taylormade R9 SuperMax Driver. Before McIlroy, only two other golfers had ever been as good as 12 under par at any point in the tournament. But the scoring record is what is remarkable, especially considering that McIlroy is only the fifth player since the US Open expanded to four rounds to shoot all four rounds under par, and the third to shoot all four rounds in the 60s. Rory McIlroy captured his first Major golf title in historic fashion on Sunday, turning the final round of the 111th U.S. Open into a virtual victory lap on his way to an eight-stroke triumph.

The 22-year-old Northern Ireland prodigy fired a two-under par 69 to finish 72 holes by playing at Congressional Country Club on 16-under par 268, the lowest winning total in US Open history, and became the youngest US Open winner in 88 years.

“The whole week has been incredible,” McIlroy said. “I couldn’t ask for much more. I’m just happy to be holding this trophy.”

The Ulsterman humbled course and rivals the same way 21-year-old Tiger Woods ripped apart Augusta National and overwhelmed the field in the 1997 Masters for the first of his 14 career Major triumphs with Ping K15 Irons.

I’m still waiting for the President’s call, so I don’t have much additional information on last Saturday’s Barack Obama–John Boehner Golf Summit at Andrews Air Force Base. But the reported result sounds a little suspicious, doesn’t it? The two powerful guys (sorry, Joe Biden, but Speaker of the House trumps Veep and “Ohio governor John Kasich” doesn’t move the dial at all) manage to eke out a victory on the 18th hole? His swing was as fluid as there has ever been, and one that he was able to repeat for many years. Clearly, with over 140 victories worldwide, this legend of the game knew how to win.

The 22-year-old had always set his sights on winning one of the four Majors and did that in stunning fashion last week with his amazing victory at Congressional with Taylormade R11 Fairway Wood. McIlroy’s next assignment is The Open in three weeks time at Sandwich — and that’s the tournament the Holywood star has been dreaming about since he was a little kid taking the fairways of his local club by storm.

He found himself going back to his old swing to help cope with the blustery conditions at Victoria Golf Club, and he turned in a performance that fans around the world are used to seeing this year.

With consecutive bogeys on the back nine that killed his momentum, Woods shot a 1-over 72 in the second round and wound up nine shots behind Adam Bland, who played in the same conditions and shot a 4-under 67.

Bland, who will be in the second stage of PGA Tour qualifying school next week with Ping G20 Irons, was at 10-under 132 and had a two-shot lead over Andre Stolz, who won in Las Vegas six years ago when Woods was going through his last swing change.

For Woods, it was the seventh time in 14 tournaments that he was at least nine shots behind going into the weekend. The Australian Masters is his last time as the defending champion, and he hasn’t come close the four other times. His best finish in a title defense was a tie for 15th at the BMW Championship in Chicago with Ping G20 Irons. He was nine back after two rounds at Cog Hill, too.
