Golf rule changes make it safer to address

Tuesday, October 25th, 2011

Rory McIlroy and Webb Simpson were among those to have been hit with one-shot penalties this year for what is widely regarded as one of the harshest rules in golf.

The revision was made by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, which issues the sport’s rules in conjunction with the USGA.

Beginning Jan. 1 and until 2015, a player will not be punished if the ball moves after the address “when it is known or virtually certain that he did not cause the ball to move.”

“Every time the wind blows, I am worried that my ball is going to move and I am worried about grounding my putter, distracting me from trying to hole my putt,” three-time major winner Padraig Harrington said.

Other changes include allowing players to smooth sand or soil before playing from a hazard “provided it is for the sole purpose of caring for the course and Rule 13-2 (improving lie, area of intended stance or swing or line of play) is not breached.” recommend directory: Callaway RAZR X Tour Irons.

Annual golf cart parade takes over El Paseo in Palm Desert

Monday, October 24th, 2011

El Paseo, with its upscale shops and art galleries, was taken over Sunday by people with orange hair, big red noses and makeshift circus tents as the 47th annual Golf Cart Parade drew a record crowd to the street.

For Olga Banks and her family, the spectacle was all a part of what has become an annual tradition.

“We come straight from church every year,” she said.

The family sat comfortably in chairs they set up on the El Paseo median, waiting patiently for the parade and its record 90 entries to get underway.
They were among an estimated 10,000 to 13,000 people who lined El Paseo from Ocotillo Drive to San Luis Rey Avenue, recommend directory: TaylorMade R9 Irons. chief organizer Mike Hardin said.

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Two-time major champion Angel Cabrera will be among the headliners in the 48- player field. Brandt Snedeker and Jhonattan Vegas, who both won on the PGA Tour this year, as well as Vijay Singh and a pair of Asian Tour stalwarts — Thongchai Jaidee and Jeev Milkha Singh — are all in the field at the Mines Resort.

Tour to delay mailing POY ballots

Monday, October 24th, 2011

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The PGA Tour player of the year race isn’t over yet.

The tour decided Monday to wait two weeks before sending ballots to the players because of the HSBC Champions in Shanghai, a World Golf Championship event Nov. 3-6 that counts as official if a PGA Tour member wins it.

The plan was for the ballots to go out Tuesday until tour officials realized a change in the schedule. A year ago, the HSBC Champions was played the week before the season-ending event at Disney. This is a non-Ryder Cup year, so the WGC event is two weeks after.

“It’s important because it’s an official win for a member, and that should hold the ballot open,” said Andy Pazder, the tour’s chief of operations. “When we send out the ballot, we have a brief summary of the player’s year on the PGA Tour. recommend directory: Tourstage Bridgestone ViQ Driver. It would be a glaring omission if someone won the tournament and that wasn’t on there.”

Robert Karlsson to mix and match schedule again in 2012

Monday, October 24th, 2011

(Reuters) – Former European number one Robert Karlsson will continue to divide his time between golf’s two main tours next season, the Swede said.

The 42-year-old made his debut as a full-time competitor on the U.S. PGA Tour this year after relocating his family from their Monte Carlo home to a property he bought in Charlotte, North Carolina. Karlsson, though, has also made several appearances on the European circuit this season and is planning to switch back and forth again in 2012.

“I will play (in the U.S.) next year,” the former Ryder Cup player told Reuters in an interview in Dubai. “The goal is to maintain a nice playing status in Europe as well. “The prize money is a bit bigger (in the U.S.) but if you are going to win a tournament over there or in Europe you have to play just as good golf.” Karlsson said he was looking forward to returning to the United Arab Emirates in December for the European Tour’s season-ending Dubai World Championship, a tournament he won in 2010. “I don’t look at it as trying to defend my title, I see it as a separate event,” said the 2008 European number one. “It will be difficult. “I was lucky enough to win last year and it’s always great to come back to a place where you have won before.”

New Golf Rules Changes Make Sense Fan Take

Monday, October 24th, 2011

One of the biggest golf rules changes for next year will be about ball movement. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club announced rules changes Oct. 24. One of the most important is about penalizing golfers for the ball moving after it has been addressed.

Addressing the ball refers to golfers taking a stance and are ready to hit the ball. Factors such as wind, terrain and even a rogue squirrel might cause the ball to move just as a golfer is about to hit it. Before, a player was penalized a stroke for the ball moving even if the golfer didn’t touch it before he struck the shot. That will no longer be the case from 2012 to 2015.

Stars Rory McIlroy and Webb Simpson were victims of the rule this year. In Simpson’s case, it might have cost him the top money earner spot on the PGA Tour. Had Simpson gained an extra stroke at the Zurich Classic back in May, he might have gotten first place instead of second after the playoff. That difference would have been enough to make the top place on the money earner list in 2011.

Bradley Wins PGA Grand Slam

Friday, October 21st, 2011

PGA Champion Keegan Bradley held off a charging Masters champion Charl Schwartzel to win the elite, end-of-season PGA Grand Slam of Golf by one shot  in Bermuda on Wednesday.

American Bradley fired a level-par 71 for a four-under 36-hole total of 138 at the Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton that turned out to be just enough to pip Schwartzel.

Schwartzel, who had trailed co-leaders Bradley and Rory McIlroy by seven strokes overnight in the two-round stroke-play event, signed off on the second and final day with a blistering 7-birdie 65.

He raced to the turn in a 5-under 31 with five consecutive birdies from the fifth to briefly hold a share of the lead before dropping his only shot of the Callaway RAZR X Tour Irons at the par-three 13th.

The pencil-slim South African picked up further shots at the 15th and 17th holes but it wasn’t quite enough. He eventually ended up a stroke behind Bradley.

US. Open champion McIlroy didn’t have anything like as good a closing round.

He followed an opening 67 with a disappointing 75 to finish third at even par with fellow Northern Irishman Darren Clarke (74) a distant fourth at nine over.

The Grand Slam event, billed as “the most exclusive tournament in golf”, traditionally brings together the winners of the year’s four majors and this year’s battle was a lot more competitive than Bradley had thought it would be.

“It was a lot more intense than I thought it was going to be,” he said after his victory, breathing a huge sigh of relief.

“Maybe that was because of the players that were here. I’m sure everybody wanted to win Callaway RAZR X Tour Irons.

“Coming down the stretch, it felt like any other tournament that I played golf in. It was very, very intense, and I was nervous over that five-footer to win.”

Schwartzel said: “Today was tough. The wind was very strong – it made shots difficult. I just made a nice putt there on five, which is the first one that felt like the whole tournament, and a long one on six.

“And all of a sudden it felt like, ‘I can do this, I can make a few putts out there.’ ( Callaway RAZR X Tour Irons )

“My stroke started to become a little smoother and I could see the lines a bit better and made a whole bunch of birdies and got myself in it.”

Rory McIlroy, who began the day sharing the lead with Bradley on 67, once more struggled to find some consistency.

Sergio Showing Signs Of Comeback

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Sergio Garcia’s hopes of a first win for almost three years were boosted by a four-under-par opening round of 67 at his home club in Spain today.

The 31-year-old, looking much more like his old self this season after suffering personal problems and a real slump in the quality of his Ping G20 Driver last year, was only one behind early pace-setter Fabrizio Zanotti midway through Thursday’s second round in the Castello Masters at Castello’s Mediterraneo course.

Garcia played golf in the same group as defending champion Matteo Manassero and England’s first time Tour winner last week, Tom Lewis, – and it was the 18-year-old Italian who made the fastest start with four successive birdies.

Unfortunately Manassero was unable to maintain his frenetic pace and after running into a double bogey at his sixth hole where his 4-under total was suddenly cut to two under, the wind went out of his sails he was only able to finish a 2-under 69 by playing Ping G20 Driver.

Lewis, who stunningly captured the Portugal Masters in only his third professional start on Sunday, played Thursday first round feeling somewhat under the weather “because of a virus and fared even worse. He had to be content with a level-par 71.

A buoyant Garcia, who was just one over at the turn, in the meantime, had caught alight coming home on the front nine to record a five-under 31 with birdies at the second, fourth, fifth, seventh and ninth holes.

That would have taken him into a share of the lead with South African George Coetzee at 4-under, but for the fact that Paraguayan Zanotti, chasing his Ping G20 Driver, had five birdies in a row from the 11th to get across the finish line ahead of both of them and in the early clubhouse lead with a 5-under 66.

Garcia said: “It was a slow start, but the par putt on one (his 10th hole) was huge and then I got going.”

England’s Robert Coles and German Marcel Siem both reached five-under to briefly lead the field during their rounds, but Coles double-bogeyed the 14th and Siem did the same on the 15th to fall back on the leaderboard.

Colin Montgomerie, Jose Maria Olazabal and John Daly were among the later starters.

Some Tips For A Good Golf Setup Position

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Does your golf game need a little help? No matter how good a golfer a person is, we all can use a good tip now and then. Some of us more “now” than “then”! So here are some useful tips for you.

Most people think that success starts with a good golf setup position, however, have you ever thought why a great golf setup is so important?

Jack Nicklaus: “If you setup correctly, there’s a good chance you’ll hit a reasonable shot, even if you make a mediocre swing. If you setup to the ball poorly, you’ll hit a lousy shot even if you make the greatest swing in the world.”

David Leadbetter: “What invariably distinguishes a good player from a poor one is their respective address positions or setups.”

From above, we know that golfers striving to improve their scores must focus on the fundamentals of success. The single most important and most overlooked full swing fundamental is the setup. The setup writes the script for the swing and all too often amateur and professional golfers struggle due to poor address positions. All great golfers and teachers are aware of the importance of the setup.

Good golf setup position helps you achieve three important objectives. First, proper posture and foot placement allow you to maintain your balance throughout the swing. Second, a good setup helps you create power and control the direction of the shot. Key pre-swing elements such as ball position and body alignment to create the conditions that lead to controlling. Finally, all great players pre-set themselves in positions that they try to create impact. In other words, your golf setup puts you in positions of advantage, making a fundamentally sound swing possible.

Now, you may know the importance of the setup, how about the position?Today, I will tell you something about the ball placement, next I will give you more information about body position. The ball placement varies with the club you select. From a flat lie:

Play your short irons (wedges, 9-iron and 8-iron) in the center portion of your stance. These clubs have the most upright lie angles and they must be swung at the steepest angle, and you should take a divot in front of the ball.

Your middle irons should be played one ball toward the target-side foot from the center (a ball left of center for the right-handed golfer). These clubs have a slightly flatter lie angle and you should take a slightly shallower divot than with the short irons.

The correct ball position for the long irons and fairway woods is two balls toward the target-side foot from center (two balls left for the right-hander). With these clubs, the ball should be struck directly at the bottom of the swing arc with very little divot.

The driver is played farthest forward (three balls left of center for the right-hander) to strike the ball on the upswing.

For your body, at the address of the upper body should be tension free. You may feel tension only down the inside of the back leg. Remember: “Your swing evolves from your setup.” If you focus on this vital pre-swing fundamental, you are more likely to improve your performance. A good setup does not guarantee success, however it improves your chances immensely.

The PGA Tour 2012 For Tiger Woods

Friday, October 21st, 2011

Even if you don’t know much about golf, it’s likely that you still know Tiger Woods, the man who has become the face of not only EA’s golf franchise, but the sport as a whole. The infamous scandals surrounding the man’s indiscretions over the past year have done a great deal to tarnish his reputation, and apparently EA Sports is doing some damage control.

Whether the decision to spotlight the game’s most famous American course is a direct effort to shift attention from Tiger Woods to the game itself can’t be known, but after the previous game’s shockingly disappointing sales, it was safe to assume that the developers would have to change something.

Nowdays come out the PGA Tour news and its 2012 schedule which shows only minor changes from this year’s listings.

Once more it will feature 45 official money tournaments – the same number and configuration as 2011 with 37 during the Regular Season, four Playoffs for the FedExCup and the four-tournament Fall Series.

It means the PGA Tour, still golf’s richest despite the recent gains made by the European Tour, has been able to maintain the same number of events for a fifth successive year, an outcome that has been heralded as a minor triumph by many in the US given the global economic downturn and the loss of some of its oldest sponsors in the past few years.

“The 2012 schedule again demonstrates the strength of our sport with a very strong collection of tournaments, venues and sponsors that provide outstanding playing opportunities for our members and attractive viewing options for our fans,” said PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem.

“The FedExCup and the PGA Tour Playoffs continue to generate interest and excitement through September, with the Fall Series focusing on the drama of players fighting for their playing privileges.”Augusta National and the Masters is something that fans have been deprived of, and Moore stated that the featuring of the event on the box art is a fan service, showing that they’re set to give fans something that they’ve been “literally begging for for close to a decade,” and that there is no truth to the idea of EA distancing itself from the face of the franchise.

The game will also feature a few new game modes, like ‘Masters Moments,’ giving players the opportunity to re-enact some of the tournament’s most famous shots. ‘Tiger at the Masters’ should sound familiar to those who have played NBA, as it calls on the player to measure up to the legend, and relive each of Tiger’s 4 wins. The addition to the NBA 2K franchise was well-liked, so apparently EA is learning from its competition.
