Graham Hill of Forest, Ont., shot a 5-under 67 on Thursday to take a 1-shot lead after the first round of the 106th Canadian men’s amateur golf championship.
Hill, who carded eight birdies and three bogeys on the London Hunt and Country Club course, has four players hot on his heels, one shot back.
Not bad for his first competitive event of the season.
“I didn’t really know what to expect today because I haven’t played competitive golf for a while,” said Hill, 24, brother of golfer Matt Hill, who recently turned pro. “I played well, made a couple of bogeys I’d like to have back, but I also left some birdies out there.”
Hill’s last competitive golf championship was the 2009 U.S. Amateur, where he was suffering from mononucleosis and missed the cut.
Hill will play the second round of the tournament at Redtail Golf Course.
“I know Redtail better than London Hunt,” Hill said. “The rough is pretty penal, so I’m going to try to keep it in the fairway. It’s still early, I’m not even thinking about whether or not I can win.”

Lion Kim of Ann Arbor, Mich., Jeffrey Clarridge of Barrie, Ont., Daniel Kim of Toronto and Marc-Etienne Bussieres of Gatineau, Que., all shot 68. Five players are two shots off the pace, while 10 are three shots back.
Two-time defending champion Cam Burke of New Hamburg, Ont., trying to become the first player to win three consecutive Amateur titles, shot 1-under 71 and sits four shots back.
The winner of the tournament earns an exemption to the 2011 RBC Canadian Open, to be held at Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club in Vancouver.
Meanwhile, British Columbia holds a two-stroke lead into Friday’s final round of in Willingdon Cup interprovincial team championship. B.C. posted a team-total 3-under par.
B.C. hasn’t last won the Willingdon Cup in 2004, when the event was held at Beaconsfield Golf Club in Pointe Claire, Que.
Alberta sits two strokes back, while Ontario is third at 1-over par.
